Viñuela: Reservoir, Routes and Culture
Accommodation in Viñuela
The La Viñuela Reservoir, two routes with distinct characteristics and local cultural traditions give Viñuela several specific facets. When planning your trip, you can first decide whether you are particularly interested in the landscape around the water, signposted routes, or historical and musical themes.
Reservoir and Leisure Activities
The La Viñuela Reservoir covers the valley between La Viñuela and Los Romanes. Facilities for water sports are available in the surrounding area. There is also a recreational area with barbecue spots, mini golf and a football pitch. This brings together different leisure options: water sports on the one hand and the facilities in the recreational area on the other. If you are planning your trip around your interests, you can consider these separately from the historic sites and routes.
Routes with Different Focuses
A peripheral route runs from Las Monjas to El Castillejo on the opposite side of the reservoir. The municipality of Viñuela has signposted key points along this route. Its stated endpoints and its location beyond the reservoir shape how you find your way along it.
The Ruta del Agua offers a different kind of route. It starts in the centre of La Viñuela, leaves the town via Calle Camino de la Fuente and turns west at a 90-degree bend. Along the way, signs point to the old washhouse, the bathing area at Pozanco, Fuente Lejos and the historic irrigation channel. They also point to other historical and natural features associated with the Arroyo de los Cortijuelos. The routes have different focuses: the peripheral route is defined by its endpoints and lakeside location, while the Ruta del Agua draws attention to named historical and natural features.
Architectural History and Culture
The Ermita Virgen de las Angustias is located in the Barriada de Los Ramírez and was commissioned in 1888. Another cultural and historical landmark is the Torre de la Atalaya. It is listed as a Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC) under Law 14/2007. The dated commissioning of a chapel and the legal protection status of a tower thus offer different ways of connecting with the town’s history.
Fiesta de la Pasa and Verdiales
The Fiesta de la Pasa is possibly one of the oldest festivals associated with local raisin production. One edition included a market featuring typical products and crafts from the comarca; the programme may vary from one edition to another.
Verdiales is a rural musical tradition. The pandas, made up of fiesteros, sing a type of fandango accompanied by lutes, guitars and violins. The festival and the music offer different cultural themes: the connection with raisin production on the one hand, and singing and instrumental accompaniment on the other.
Getting There by Car
To get there by car, take the A-7 via Vélez-Málaga, leave at exit 272 and continue on the A-356 towards La Viñuela. The A-7205 then leads to the town entrance. This sequence provides a starting point for planning your route; check current navigation information before you travel.
