If you choose Teba for a stay, you can plan your trip around several clearly defined themes: megalithic sites, signposted routes, connections to Cervantes, or the Feria del Queso Artesano. The route descriptions differ in length and difficulty. The archaeological sites, in turn, represent different periods and forms. You can therefore decide in advance whether you would prefer to focus on hiking, prehistory, literature or cheese-making traditions.

Dolmens and prehistoric caves

The currently documented inventory of the La Lentejuela necropolis comprises 12 dolmens across just over 6 hectares. It is considered the largest concentration of megalithic structures in Málaga province. The dolmens date from the Late Neolithic and the Copper Age; evidence points to their reuse during the Bronze Age. The complex includes two peristalith circles with burial mounds inside, as well as several chamber tombs. Several types of burial structure and prehistoric periods are therefore at the heart of this site.

The Cueva de las Palomas is also part of the prehistoric story: its underground system served as a refuge for prehistoric communities; schematic red rock paintings are attributed to the Copper Age. The necropolis and the cave offer different points of interest if you are interested in early communities: dolmens and chamber tombs here, an underground system with rock art there.

Signposted routes and their different profiles

The route through the Sierra de La Lentejuela starts at Teba’s industrial estate, is signposted, and is listed as 12 km long with a medium-to-high difficulty level. A connecting path branches off from the route, where the remains of the ancient Roman city at Cortijo del Tajo are located. The route description therefore combines specific information about length and difficulty with an archaeological point of interest.

The also-signposted Tajo del Molino route starts on Calle Santiago and is rated as moderate. Its length is given as 10 km or just over 9 km. By comparison, the Sierra route is longer at 12 km and is described as medium to high in difficulty. The Nacimiento de Torró is also mentioned in connection with Tajo del Molino. This spring supplies water to the surrounding vegetable gardens and part of Teba; however, the description does not explicitly state that the route goes all the way to the spring.

Cervantes connections and puzzles

As part of Teba Ciudad Cervantina, ten street totems provide information about the geographical context of 1594 and about Cervantes, his life and work. Dulcinea, Sancho and episodes from Don Quixote are also among the themes. QR codes provide additional information; the puzzle game includes a map and the locations of the various puzzles. The literary focus complements the archaeological themes with a distinct way to explore Cervantes and his work.

Cheese-making traditions and the fair

The Feria Mercado del Queso Artesano is recognised as a Fiesta de Singularidad Turística. More than 50 cheese dairies offer products there, including Andalusian cheeses and cheeses with significant designations of origin from across the Iberian Peninsula. Depending on the edition, the programme includes practical workshops on making fresh artisan cheese and guided tastings of four traditional Andalusian cheeses. Dates and programmes vary from one edition to another. So if you want to plan your trip around the fair, check the dates for the relevant edition.

This gives you several possible focuses when planning your trip: the routes can be compared by their stated length and difficulty; La Lentejuela, the Cueva de las Palomas and the Cervantes totems represent different historical and cultural themes. The fair adds a seasonal focus on cheese and regional varieties.
