Moclinejo: Wine Route, Festivals and Culture
Accommodation in Moclinejo
Moclinejo combines wine-making traditions, festivals and culture with the Ronda and Málaga Wine Route, which passes through the town in the province of Málaga. The recurring events are of particular interest when choosing your travel dates; the church, museums and walking trails offer other focal points. This way, you can decide whether to plan your stay around a festival date or focus on architecture and routes through the countryside.
Wine Route and Recurring Festivals
The Fiesta de Viñeros is celebrated every year on the second Sunday in September, after the grape harvest has ended. The event features live demonstrations of grape-harvesting activities, including treading the grapes, sieving and making raisins. There are also tastings of typical products such as Moscatel wine, gazpacho and roscos. The specific offerings may vary from year to year, so check the programme for your preferred date before travelling. The Fiesta de Viñeros is recognised as an event of provincial tourist interest.
A Certamen de Verdiales is also held annually in Moclinejo. If this date is important to your travel plans, check it in advance. The two cultural events therefore differ not only in their connection to the grape harvest and Verdiales, respectively, but also in how specifically a recurring date is given.
Architecture and Museums
The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de Gracia was built in the 16th century and features Mudéjar and Renaissance elements. Those interested in historic architecture will find two distinct architectural influences in this named building.
The Casa Museo de El ValdĂ©s celebrates local traditions and crafts, as well as the artistic work of Antonio Montañez. It was built largely from reused demolition materials and houses between 100 and 150 works of art. The Bodega Antonio Muñoz Cabrera offers a different aspect of local culture: a guided tour of its facilities can be booked, and its indoor museum can be visited. There, you can trace the development of wine production in the AxarquĂa from 1927 to the present day. Check the current availability of visits in advance.
Hiking and Family-Friendly Trails
The hiking options include both more challenging routes with greater elevation changes and easy, level routes suitable for children. Some trails pass through vineyards and by old wine presses. When choosing a route, you can therefore take both the elevation profile and the surrounding landscape into account.
There is also a special route for children that leads to the house of Ratoncito Pérez by following clues. A guided tourist route runs through Moclinejo and El Valdés. It offers a different way to experience both places on one tour; as arrangements may change, check current availability in advance.
Getting to Moclinejo from Málaga
By car, Moclinejo can be reached from Málaga via the A-7 and MA-3113. Check road conditions and access restrictions before setting off. Regular buses also run from Málaga to Moclinejo, served by route 262. If you plan to travel by bus, check the latest timetable and service information before your trip. You therefore have two different transport options, each requiring different up-to-date information when planning your journey.
