Discover Alpandeire: History, Festivals and Trails
Accommodation in Alpandeire
Alpandeire combines a village layout shaped by its history with sites commemorating Fray Leopoldo, local festivals and several documented hiking trails. When planning a hike, you can take the length and duration of individual trails into account; other routes are defined primarily by their historic course. You can also consider both fixed dates and changing annual programmes when planning around festivals.
History and Village Layout
The present-day village of Alpandeire dates back to the 8th century. In the SerranĂa de Ronda, it was one of the first places fortified by Muslims. The influence of Andalusi Arab culture can still be seen in the street layout. The village’s history and the sites where archaeological traces have been found are located in different places.
Archaeological finds are also part of the history of the municipal area: there are archaeological sites at Cerro de Castillejos, and Chalcolithic dolmens have been discovered in the Encinas Borrachas area. The Chalcolithic dolmens in the Encinas Borrachas area date from a different period than the origins of the present-day village in the 8th century. Alpandeire’s history therefore encompasses both the development of the village and finds in its surroundings.
Fray Leopoldo and Religious Buildings
Casa Natal de Fray Leopoldo is furnished to help visitors understand how people lived in Alpandeire in the second half of the 19th century. Its rooms include his bedroom, his parents’ bedroom, a simple living room, a small chapel and a central courtyard. The different rooms bring the living conditions described to life, rather than conveying Fray Leopoldo’s story solely through individual objects.
The parish church was built in the 18th century. It contains the baptismal font where Fray Leopoldo was baptised, and is visited by numerous groups of pilgrims from across Andalusia. The Baroque Chapel of San Roque has paintings from that period. The church, baptismal font and chapel thus represent different aspects of Alpandeire’s religious heritage.
Festivals Throughout the Year
The Fiestas de San Roque take place on the weekend closest to 16 August. They include two processions through the village. As the programme may vary from year to year, it is advisable to check the current festival dates and schedule before travelling. This allows you to plan your stay around the specific event dates.
El Niño del Huerto is a traditional celebration in Alpandeire held on Easter Sunday; the annual programme may vary. The festival of the Virgen del Rosario is celebrated on 7 October, although the current programme may also differ. These dates offer different points in the calendar to plan around: Easter Sunday, the weekend closest to 16 August and 7 October.
Hiking Trails and Navigation
The Sendero de los Huertos passes through cultivated areas and traditional gardens, across water-rich landscapes and alongside irrigation channels. The route has various climbs and changes in elevation, and is not recommended for people with reduced mobility. Check local trail conditions before setting out, as they can affect conditions along the route.
Another documented route runs between Atajate and Alpandeire. It connects the Sendero de los Huertos with Stage 5 of the Gran Senda de la SerranĂa de Ronda (GR 141), is ten kilometres long and takes about four and a half hours. This linear route therefore provides a clear guide to distance and time required. These details refer to the route between the two villages, not to the Sendero de los Huertos alone.
The Ruta de Fray Leopoldo passes through Jimera de LĂbar, Atajate and Alpandeire. It follows the path Fray Leopoldo took from Jimera de LĂbar railway station via Atajate and through Audalázar to Alpandeire. In 2025, the route was maintained and in use; check local trail conditions before relying on this status. In the Alpandeire section, the route was marked in 2013 with information boards and footprints in the road surface leading to the birthplace and the church. If you plan to follow these markers, check their condition on site.
Woodland Landscapes in the Valle del Genal
In the Valle del Genal, extensive chestnut forests form the Bosque de Cobre, which surrounds Alpandeire and other white villages, among other places. This regional setting adds a landscape perspective to the historic sites and hiking trails. The entire forest does not lie within Alpandeire: the Bosque de Cobre is part of the village’s wider surroundings.
