Historic Towers and Archaeological Traces
The Torre del Algarrobo is a fortified watchtower dating from the 13th century. Since 1985, it has been protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural in the Monument category. An archaeological site from the Iberian period is located on the same grounds. Its rectangular footprint covers approximately 400 square meters.
The Torrevieja has also been recognized and protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural since 1985. It was part of the defensive structure of the Order of Calatrava and is also known as Torrevieja de Cazalla or La Torre. The “Torres y Picos de Fuensanta” hiking route connects this local history with two named destinations: it leads to Cerro del Algarrobo, with the old Torre del Algarrobo, and then to the Torrevieja.
Architecture and Local History
The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Fuensanta dates back to the 16th century and features a restrained Renaissance style. The story behind the Fuente de La Negra’s current design is also notable: local residents chose it in a vote from among several designs.
The Lavadero dates from the 17th century. Its strongly social role continued almost to the present day. Together with the church and the fountain, it offers a glimpse of different facets of the town’s history: religious architecture, community-led design, and the long-standing use of a washhouse.
Festivals and Passion Plays
The patron saint festivities, popularly known as the Feria del Higo, take place from September 23 to 26 during the fig season. If you would like to plan your trip around this festival, these dates provide a specific timeframe for your visit.
The Passion plays also have a long history: they were revived in 1975 after previously falling into oblivion. On Maundy Thursday, the Passion and death of Jesus Christ are reenacted at a place known as El Calvario.
Ravines, Waterways, and Habitats
The Arroyo de la HumbrĂa forms a small ravine beside Fuensanta De Martos. A path along the watercourse begins right in the town center. The RĂo VĂboras runs through Fuensanta De Martos; the area’s diverse habitats support the presence of amphibians and reptiles.
The patchwork landscape is made up of pastureland, scrubland with hawthorns and wild roses, and cherry orchards. This landscape supports a diverse bird population. The ravine, rivers, and habitats described here offer different ways to explore the area’s natural side.
Choose Hiking Routes by Their Destinations
The “Torres y Picos de Fuensanta” route starts and ends in the town center at Plaza del Ayuntamiento. From there, it leads to Cerro del Algarrobo, with the old Torre del Algarrobo, and then to the Torrevieja. The circular hike to the Despeñadero leads to one of Fuensanta’s highest points, as well as to several caves and sinkholes. Another route starts in Fuensanta De Martos and follows the river of the UmbrĂa to its source.
The destinations differ considerably: one route focuses on the historic towers, the circular hike on the Despeñadero and the caves and sinkholes, and the other on the watercourse leading to its source. You can therefore choose your excursions based on whether you would like to focus on cultural history, geological formations, or the course of a waterway.
Olive Growing as a Topic in Its Own Right
The Fuensanta Interpretation Center focuses on olive tree biology, olive varieties, the by-products of olive growing, and their uses. This adds a dedicated focus on olive growing to the town’s buildings, festivals, and hiking destinations.
