Andújar offers cultural attractions in its historic town centre and museums, while the Sierra de Andújar is a destination for activities in the nature park. If you’re looking for a hotel in Andújar, start by deciding what matters most for your trip: would you like to explore the town’s history and ceramics, visit the Sanctuary of the Virgen de la Cabeza, or set aside time for hiking and mountain biking? You can plan around these interests by choosing specific places and routes.

Town history and ceramic traditions

Andújar’s historic town centre has been designated a Site of Cultural Interest since 2007. For a different cultural perspective, visit the Centro de Interpretación de la Cerámica “JARDÍN DEL ALFARERO”: it presents the town’s pottery tradition from the Bronze Age to the present day. The exhibition includes more than 200 ceramic pieces; its scope may change when it is updated. This timeline connects early history with a tradition that continues to the present day.

The Museo Arqueológico Profesor Sotomayor is housed in the Palacio Niños de Don Gome. The museum offers insights into the archaeology and history of the municipality and displays significant artefacts from Iberian, Roman and Visigothic cultures. This lets you choose different themes for your cultural itinerary: the long ceramic tradition on the one hand, and archaeological artefacts and local history on the other.

Sanctuary and pilgrimage

The Basilica and Royal Sanctuary of the Virgen de la Cabeza are located in the Sierra de Andújar Natural Park and were originally built between 1287 and 1304. The basilica houses the Museo Mariano. Its important artistic, documentary and anthropological collection explores the heritage of devotion to the Virgen de la Cabeza, which has developed over centuries.

The pilgrimage is also part of the history of this religious site: it has been celebrated on the last Sunday in April since the first half of the 13th century. If you’d like to plan your trip around it, check the programme for the relevant year in advance.

Hiking, mountain biking and architectural history

The Sierra de Andújar Natural Park offers environmentally responsible activities such as hiking and mountain biking. The Old Route to the Sanctuary starts in Andújar, on the San Amancio road. The A-6177 connects Andújar with the sanctuary and is the main access route to the Sierra de Andújar Natural Park. These are two distinct reference points for planning: a specific starting point for the Old Route and road access to the sanctuary and park. Check trail and road conditions before setting out.

Another stop for anyone interested in the landscape and architectural history is the Puente Viejo del Jándula, also known as the Puente del Mocho. It stands in the heart of the natural park, on the Lugar Nuevo estate. The present-day bridge dates from the 17th century and has semicircular cutwaters. Alongside outdoor activities, you can also visit a historic structure with a clearly identifiable architectural feature.
