In Zalamea La Real, archaeological remains, mining history, landscapes and religious traditions stand side by side as distinct themes. When planning your stay, you can consider these highlights and decide which aspects interest you most. The Dólmenes de El Pozuelo and Los Aulagares represent different archaeological periods and forms; the Mina de Chiflón and the Ruta del Ferrocarril Minero offer further insight into the area’s mining history.

Dolmens and Rock Art

The Dólmenes de El Pozuelo are among Europe’s most significant megalithic archaeological complexes. The complex comprises eleven burial structures, generally dated to between 3000 and 2500 BC. In 2002, the dolmens were designated an Asset of Cultural Interest (B.I.C.) in the category of archaeological zone. The number of burial structures, their general dating and their formal designation provide different points of reference for understanding the complex.

Los Aulagares represents a different period and artistic focus. The rock engravings are found on large, rounded rhyolite stones and belong to megalithic schematic art. They date from between 1800 and 1500 BC. Since 1994, Los Aulagares has also been designated an Asset of Cultural Interest (B.I.C.) in the category of archaeological zone. By comparison, the burial structures at El Pozuelo are generally placed in an earlier period, while the engravings at Los Aulagares represent a later phase.

Mining History and the Railway

The Mina de Chiflón lies next to the Los Llanetes group within the archaeological complex of the Dólmenes de El Pozuelo. It is described as Europe’s oldest underground metallurgical mine. Alongside the burial structures, mining history is therefore another distinct part of the area’s historical story.

Another trace of this history is the Ruta del Ferrocarril Minero. It runs along Spain’s first railway line used exclusively to transport minerals. The railway operated from 1870 to 1969. Its specific purpose and period of operation give the route a different focus from the archaeological sites: here, the connection between the railway and mineral transport takes center stage.

Landscape and Circular Trail

As a natural viewpoint, Mina ChinflĂłn offers views of steep slopes and lower, gently rounded landforms. The landscape described also includes holm oak dehesas, Mediterranean woodland and eucalyptus plantations. These different landforms and vegetation types each contribute to the view.

For planning a loop walk, there is also a specific detail: the circular trail starting at Casa de Los Llanetes is 1,700 meters long. Trail conditions may change, so check them before setting out. The distance indicates the length of the loop and can help you plan your day.

Hermitage and VĂa Sacra

Religious buildings and traditions are also part of the themes you can explore during a stay. The Ermita de San Sebastián o de la Divina Pastora houses an image of the Divina Pastora, created by Sebastián Santos Rojas. The Ermita del Santo Sepulcro is the final station of the Vía Sacra. This takes place every Good Friday and has existed since the mid-18th century. If you would like to plan your trip around this date, confirm the details in advance.

Road Access

Zalamea La Real lies on the central stretch of the N-435, an important road running through the province of Huelva. This road connection adds a practical consideration for travel planning to the area’s historical and landscape highlights.
