Lepe combines a town centre shaped by history with pilgrimage traditions and a varied coastal landscape. When choosing your destination, you might consider whether you are particularly interested in architecture and local history, a festival in May, or routes and activities in nature. The following places and options each offer a different focus.

Local History and Architecture

Plaza de España lies in the centre of Lepe, where the town’s main streets converge. Iglesia Santo Domingo de Guzmán stands on the plaza. Originally dating back to the 16th century, it is built in the Gothic-Mudéjar style. In 1985, it was declared a historic-artistic monument. Capilla San Cristóbal offers a different architectural impression: it is a freestanding 16th-century chapel in the Mudéjar style. During its restoration, sections of the original wall and vault paintings were uncovered or restored.

The history of tuna fishing is also present in Lepe. Real de la Almadraba de Nueva Umbría is protected as a Property of Cultural Interest in the category of ethnological sites. Until it closed in 1963, it was the most important tuna-fishing facility on the coast of Huelva. The site therefore represents an important part of the region’s working and economic history. In Parque del V Centenario, a sculpture ensemble created by Francisca Abreu commemorates sailors from Lepe who took part in the discovery of America. Casa Museo Castillo de Lepe complements these historical themes with a library containing more than 3,000 volumes.

Pilgrimage and Local Traditions

Romería de la Bella takes place every year around the second weekend in May; the exact dates vary from year to year. In May 2026, it was recognised as a Fiesta de Interés Turístico de Andalucía, a festival of tourist interest in Andalusia. Cruz Primera has always been a compulsory stop on the pilgrimage. If you want to plan your trip around the celebrations, check the dates for the relevant year.

You can encounter another local tradition at Zampuzo El Rata. It was founded in 1932 and has a history spanning three generations. The proprietor makes the wine served there, and various dishes or tapas are occasionally available. As these offerings may change, it is advisable to check the current menu before visiting.

Coastal Landscapes and Routes

Flecha de Nueva Umbría is an almost 15-kilometre-long sandbar at the mouth of the Río Piedras. This geomorphological formation is considered unique throughout Spain. In the Marismas del Río Piedras and Flecha de Nueva Umbría natural area, you can go hiking, learn about the environment and watch birds. This allows you to experience the landscape not only from viewpoints, but also on foot or through birdwatching.

Ruta de la Tavirona offers a different perspective for walks, bike rides and sporting activities. The route follows a former railway embankment, with a predominantly compacted-earth surface, and is easy. One access point to Ruta de la Tavirona, a coastal route on Via Verde Litoral, is next to Lepe’s former railway station. Ruta Parque de los Cabezos is different: it is a circular route of low difficulty. From there, you can look out over a wooded coastal area and wide stretches of beach. At Playa de La Antilla, the slightly more than three-kilometre-long Sendero Azul connects the developed beach area with the dune path in the Marismas de Nueva Umbría natural area; the route is intended for pedestrians and cyclists.

Activities on the Water

Puerto de El Terrón has facilities for water sports; rod fishing and trolling are possible there. From the port, a motorboat trip upstream may pass through the Marismas del Río Piedras natural area and along Flecha de Nueva Umbría. For specific planning, check the current options and times for such trips. The routes, pilgrimage and water-based activities thus offer various ways to discover Lepe according to your interests.
