Higuera de la Sierra combines a long tradition of festivities with a rich architectural heritage and various trails leading to scenic landscapes and viewpoints. This gives you two clear areas to focus on when planning your trip: cultural heritage in the town and hikes in the Sierra. Higuera de la Sierra is also one of the municipalities in the Sierra de Aracena y Picos de Aroche Natural Park.

Festive traditions and artisanal distillation

The Cabalgata de Reyes Magos tradition has been part of Higuera de la Sierra since 1918. During the Cabalgata, residents act out scenes from the childhood of Jesus and transform themselves into biblical figures for a few hours. The festival therefore puts both theatrical performances and community participation at its heart.

Another cultural site is the Museo Martes Santo. It is dedicated to artisanal distillation and is housed in a building designed by Aníbal González. The museum includes more than 500 square metres of exhibition space, as well as gardens and organic kitchen gardens. The museum offers tastings of all its products. If you are planning a tasting or a visit to the exhibition spaces and gardens, check the current visiting options in advance.

Town centre, church and architecture

The Iglesia Parroquial de San Sebastián was inaugurated in 1746 and houses more than a hundred works of art. The designated historic town centre is also an important landmark: it is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural in the Conjunto Histórico category. This designation recognises the town centre as a protected historic ensemble.

Higuera de la Sierra’s architectural character also includes numerous buildings from the early 20th century. These include mansions that retain features of the region’s traditional vernacular architecture. This means you can explore more recent architectural styles as part of the town’s heritage, alongside the older church.

Trails and viewpoints

At the summit of the Sierra de Santa Bárbara, an unfinished hermitage serves as a viewpoint overlooking Higuera de la Sierra. Another view of the surrounding area can be enjoyed from the small viewpoint at the foot of a cave along the Camino de las Tobas: from there, you can see the area around the Barranco del Burro.

The Camino de las Tobas begins where the trail meets the HU-8132 provincial road, which connects Higuera de la Sierra with Zufre. This starting point is about 1.5 kilometres from Higuera de la Sierra. Along the trail, there is a small cave from which water falls in a small waterfall; the volume of water may vary depending on the season. Check current trail conditions before hiking the Camino de las Tobas.

Other hiking options differ in their routes and features: one trail leads from Higuera de la Sierra to Puerto de La Umbría, following the sun-facing side of the Sierra de Santa Bárbara between stone walls and olive groves. A circular route leads from Higuera de la Sierra towards El Charcón. If you would like to choose a route based on its described landscape, the route to Puerto de La Umbría offers a specific point of reference; for the trail towards El Charcón, its circular layout is the defining feature. Check current trail conditions before hiking the route to Puerto de La Umbría as well.

This distinction can help you choose a destination that suits the topics you are interested in.
