Almonte between culture and Doñana
Accommodation in Almonte
Almonte brings together local history, religious traditions and landscapes connected to Doñana. When choosing a hotel, you can first consider whether museums and architectural history, religious traditions or nature should be the main focus of your trip.
Landscape and natural environment
The Acantilado del Asperillo is a geological natural monument in Almonte and part of the Parque Natural de Doñana. It is the highest cliff of its kind in Europe. In the western part of the natural park lies the sandy coastal area of Médano del Asperillo. Its natural viewpoint reaches up to 112 metres above sea level. The Parque Nacional de Doñana, which is connected to Almonte, includes dunes, pine forests, marshes, lagoons and wildlife reserves. These habitats are home to hundreds of bird species as well as the Iberian lynx.
Museums and architectural history
The Pinacoteca Jorge Camacho is a municipal art gallery with an educational focus. The Museo de la Villa is housed in an 18th-century olive oil mill known as the Molino de Cepeda. It introduces visitors to aspects of the traditional culture of the municipality of Almonte and its connection to the Parque Nacional de Doñana. Parts of the original mill machinery, as well as pits and vessels used to store oil, have been preserved there.
The Casa Consistorial also tells the story of several building phases: Almonte’s town hall dates from the 16th century, was inaugurated in 1612, extended with a second floor in 1614 and remodelled in 1795. The Museo del Vino de Almonte is housed in a wine cellar complex dating from the late 19th century. It presents the history and production of wines from Almonte; a wine tasting is also available as part of the visit. Check access details for the Museo de la Villa and current visitor arrangements at the wine museum in advance.
Traditions and routes
The Saca de las Yeguas is a centuries-old tradition held on 26 June. Yegüerizos from Almonte drive livestock that graze in different parts of the Espacio Natural de Doñana to Almonte. The procession passes through the streets and ends at the Recinto Ganadero “Huerta La Cañada”, where traditional horse-handling activities take place. Event arrangements may vary from year to year; if you are planning your trip around it, check the date and programme for the relevant year.
La Venida de la Virgen takes place every seven years. During this event, the town centre of Almonte hosts the image of the Virgen del Rocío from 20 August until two weeks before the Romería del Rocío. During the nine-month stay of the Virgen del Rocío in Almonte, more than 100 affiliated brotherhoods make pilgrimages there on weekends; religious and cultural events are also organised.
The Ruta del Traslado follows twelve notable points along a 15-kilometre route between the Ermita de El Rocío and the parish church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción in the town of Almonte. The Ruta Torres de Almenara is designated as an urban route with beach sections; details may be updated in the associated app. The Ruta de las Yeguas is described as an urban and rural route. Its listed points in Almonte include the town entrance on Camino de los Llanos, the Monumento de las Yeguas and the Recinto Ganadero.
