Archaeological remains, historic buildings and routes give Pinos Puente a range of cultural and landscape highlights. If you are looking for a hotel in Pinos Puente, these themes may shape your plans: would you like to explore archaeological sites, learn about buildings from different periods, or include a route in your stay? The destinations differ both in type and in the stated timings for the routes.

Different kinds of archaeological traces

Cerro de los Infantes is designated as an archaeological zone and listed as a Bien de Interés Cultural. It is located within the municipality of Pinos Puente (Granada). Another archaeological site is Peñón de Zujaira, where caves carved into the rock by people form a Copper Age necropolis. The Iberian reliefs known as “Los Caballicos,” meanwhile, depict horses associated with a deity worshipped by the Iberian people; the reliefs have been restored.

These places offer different points of interest. At Cerro, the focus is on the designated archaeological zone; at Peñón, it is on the caves carved into the rock and their function as a necropolis. At Los Caballicos, it is on the figurative depictions and their religious association. The archaeological heritage therefore cannot be reduced to a single type of site.

Puente Califal and historic buildings

Puente Califal is a Caliphal bridge dating from the 9th century and has been listed as a Bien de Interés Cultural since 1922. A chapel dedicated to the Virgen de las Angustias stands on it. Locally, it is known as “La casica de la Virgen”; its vault is designed in the Mudéjar style. The bridge and chapel thus combine a building from the Caliphal period with a distinct religious dedication and a characteristic architectural detail.

The Centro de InterpretaciĂłn de la Ruta Colombina is housed in an 18th-century building. It serves both as a tourist information centre and as a museum. Compared with Puente Califal, it represents a different century and a different function: the bridge is a historic structure, while the centre combines information services and a museum in one building.

Traces of transport and water engineering

Parque Municipal de TranvĂas is located on the site of the former tram station. Tram tracks are still preserved in the ground there. The former station site thus brings another aspect of local history into view: tram transport and its physical remains.

Media Luna de Pinos is part of the area’s water infrastructure. This engineering weir is crescent-shaped and dams and regulates the water of the Río Cubillas. Unlike the archaeological sites or the former tram station, the focus here is on the technical use of water. Grouping the destinations by theme therefore helps distinguish archaeological, architectural and water-engineering highlights.

Compare routes by duration and mode of transport

A section of the Camino Mozárabe, which leads towards the Camino de Santiago, passes through the area around Pinos Puente. The Ruta del Agua is a low-intensity route that can be completed on foot, by bicycle, by car or on horseback. It takes approximately 40 minutes; the mode of transport and conditions may affect the time required. Check the conditions locally before setting out.

The Ruta ArqueolĂłgica is a medium-duration route of approximately one hour. Its duration may also vary depending on the mode of transport and conditions. As a comparison, the Ruta del Agua takes around 40 minutes and the Ruta ArqueolĂłgica about an hour. Both timings are approximate guides, not fixed promises. If duration matters when planning, allow for possible variations.

Another municipal visitor service is the Albergue Refugio Municipal del Camino Mozárabe at Calle Vereda La Alameda 1, 18240 Pinos Puente. Check the operating conditions of this facility before travelling.
