Las Gabias: Nasrid Heritage, Culture and Golf
Accommodation in Las Gabias
Las Gabias brings together cultural sites, countryside and sports facilities. When planning your trip, it is helpful to distinguish between the main attractions: the TorreĂłn and several religious buildings represent different periods, while the RĂo DĂlar and the boundary between the Vega and Secano define the landscape. There are also patron saint festivities and bus connections.
Historic buildings and their details
The TorreĂłn de Las Gabias is a Muslim alquerĂa tower from the Nasrid period, dating from the 13th to the 15th century. Its interior is accessible; inside, you can see well-preserved stucco work and tile decoration. The tower can be visited free of charge on weekdays. As opening arrangements may change, it is advisable to check locally before travelling. Alongside its historical context, the interior makes the tower’s decorative design a focus of a visit.
The Ermita de Nuestra Señora de Las Nieves dates from the late 16th century and stands at the end of Calle Ermita in the old town. Its main stained-glass window depicts the Virgen de las Nieves and was restored in 2025. Another religious building is the Iglesia Parroquial de la Encarnación, which is notable for its architectural beauty.
The Villa romana de Gabia showcases a different architectural form: it includes a 30.50-metre-long, semi-underground gallery with a barrel vault. Ten windows or skylights let in natural light, and the gallery is also decorated with marble. Its length, underground location and use of light give this Roman structure a distinctive architectural character. Together with the Nasrid tower and the later religious buildings, it allows you to include a range of building periods and forms in your travel plans.
Patron saint festivities and landscape
The Fiestas Patronales are celebrated in honour of Nuestra Señora de las Nieves Coronada. They include a solemn procession of the statue of the Virgin through the town’s main streets. The Fuente del Vino is also one of the traditional features of the festivities. The exact programme may vary from year to year. If you would like to plan your trip around the patron saint festivities, check the dates and programme for the year you intend to travel.
Las Gabias lies on a plain by the RĂo DĂlar, with significant irrigated areas on both banks. At the same time, the town sits on the boundary between the Vega and the Secano. These details complement each other: they describe both the river landscape and its irrigated areas, as well as the transition between two types of landscape. As well as individual buildings, Las Gabias therefore offers a distinctive geographical focus for travellers who would also like to plan their stay around the surrounding area.
Sports facilities and bus connections
Las Gabias is home to the 18-hole Campo de Golf Los Cosarios. If golf is an important part of your plans, check the course details before booking. The town is also home to the Campo de Tiro OlĂmpico Juan Carlos I Olympic shooting facility, which has modern facilities. These two venues offer different sporting options alongside the town’s historical and landscape attractions.
For getting around by bus, there are two routes to distinguish between. Line 156 connects Granada, Armilla, Churriana de la Vega and Las Gabias. Line 158D connects Granada and Churriana de la Vega directly with Gabia Grande. If you are planning to travel by bus, check before departure which line serves your specific destination. Routes and timetables may change, so it is advisable to check the latest information.
When choosing where to stay, you can plan your visit to Las Gabias around the focus of your trip: historic buildings and patron saint festivities, the landscape along the RĂo DĂlar or the golf course each call for different plans. If travelling by bus, take the specific route and its current timetable into account.
