Guájar-Fondón: Gorges, Trails and History
Accommodation in Guájar-Fondón
A village in the gorges of the three Guájares
Guájar-Fondón lies in the gorges that shape the distinctive landscape of the three Guájares, and is the most inland village in this group. Together with Guájar-Alto and Guájar-Faragüit, it belongs to the municipality of Los Guájares in the Sierra of the same name. This Sierra, together with the Sierra de Lújar, forms the first mountain section on the way to the southwestern side of the Sierra Nevada. Guájar-Fondón also lies on the right bank of the Río de la Toba.
Traditional white houses, balconies and courtyards with plants and flowers are part of the village's character. The surrounding area is shaped by mountains and natural landscapes; hiking and birdwatching also feature there. This brings different points of interest together: the village's built character and the area's natural attractions.
Trails and El Castillejo
The “Los tres Guájares” route follows the trails along the Río Toba through Guájar Faragüit, Guájar Fondón and Guájar Alto. It focuses on the route through three villages. El Castillejo can also be reached via a route starting in the upper part of Guájar-Fondón; this route provides access to a specific historic site. Trail conditions may change along this route.
El Castillejo is an Andalusian fortified settlement on a steep hill. It stands on a rugged limestone crag on the right bank of the Río Toba, at an altitude of 405 metres. Both the line of the walls and large parts of the inner layout are visible. The terrain and the site offer different points of reference: the hill describes its location, while the walls and inner layout show its architectural character. For those interested in cultural history, the classification as a fortified settlement and the visible features on site complement each other.
Church and patron saint's festival
The parish church of San Antonio de Padua in Guájar-Fondón is dedicated to Saint Anthony of Padua. The church building was erected over a former mosque in the Mudéjar style and rebuilt after a fire during the Morisco uprisings in the early 17th century. Unlike El Castillejo, the focus here is on the history of a church building, while the fortified settlement is defined by its hillside location and visible layout.
Guájar-Fondón's patron saint's festivals in honour of the Virgen de la Aurora take place on the first weekend in August. The specific event dates may vary from year to year. If the festivals are important when choosing your travel dates, check the event dates for the relevant year.
The GR5 and travel planning
The GR5 route of the Andalucía Rural Conectada programme runs from Guájar Alto through Guájar Faragüit and Guájar-Fondón to Motril. This order helps place the village along the route. If you are planning to use the connection for a journey, check the current timetable.
