Montilla offers several cultural points of interest for a stay: museums, historic houses, guided tours, routes and recurring festivals. If you are looking for a hotel in Montilla, you can start by deciding which of these themes you want to shape your itinerary. The places and activities featured differ in their content, how they can be visited and whether a reservation is required.

Getting there and finding your way

The A-45 expressway is the main road access to Montilla. The town also has a bus station with regular services to municipalities in the south of Córdoba province and to the main Andalusian capitals. Transport services and timetables can change, so check your connection before you leave. This lets you plan your journey before arranging your visits in town.

Museums and historic houses

The Sala Expositiva Gran Capitán is a permanent museographic exhibition about Gonzalo Fernández de Córdoba, the Gran Capitán. Check the visiting arrangements before you arrive.

The Museo Garnelo displays the largest collection of paintings by José Garnelo y Alda. It is housed in a 19th-century mansion known as the Casa de las Aguas. The museum visit therefore focuses on a collection closely associated with a particular artist and a named historic building.

The Casa Oratorio de San Juan de Ávila is associated with a specific period in his life: San Juan de Ávila lived there during the last 17 years of his life. The Casa-Museo del Inca Garcilaso can also be understood through a stage in someone’s life: the Inca Garcilaso lived there for 30 years.

The Museo Histórico Local de Montilla was established to present Montilla’s archaeological heritage. Its collection includes 27 historic ship models; individual displays may change. The museums therefore have different focuses, ranging from a single person and their story to the presentation of archaeological heritage and a collection of historic models.

Tours and routes

The Ruta Monumental offers guided tours for individuals and groups by prior reservation; the Ruta de los Murales can be visited individually, in a group or independently. The two activities therefore differ both in requiring a reserved guided tour and in the ways they can be visited. Check the reservation arrangements for the Ruta Monumental before visiting, as they may change.

The Ruta de las Fuentes Históricas begins at the Mirador de la Escuchuela. This natural viewpoint overlooks the landscape of Córdoba province, with the Sierra Morena visible in the background. The route has an option with six springs and one with eight. Check the current wayfinding before setting off so you can follow the option with the number of springs that suits you.

Festivals with a long history

Montilla’s Semana Santa dates back to the first half of the 16th century and is recognized as a Festival of Tourist Interest in Andalusia. The Fiesta de la Vendimia was established in 1955 and is considered a Festival of National Tourist Interest. The two festivals therefore differ both in their historical background and in their respective designations.

During the traditional Fiesta de la Vendimia, the courtyards of the town’s wineries and the lagares of the Sierra de Montilla are opened to visitors. Dates and participating venues may change. If you are planning your trip specifically around either festival, check the dates and program for the relevant year before travelling.
