Hinojosa del Duque brings together striking architectural history, cultural traditions and routes with different focuses. The Catedral de la Sierra and the Museo Etnológico represent different chapters in the town’s story; the Ruta de las Ermitas is a historic walking route through the town, while the Ruta del Río Guadamatilla runs alongside a dehesa of holm oaks and offers the chance to watch cranes in winter. Traditional cuisine also offers a distinctive way to experience the destination.

The Catedral de la Sierra and Historic Sites

The Church of San Juan Bautista is known as the Catedral de la Sierra and is designated a Bien de Interés Cultural (Asset of Cultural Interest). On 5 February 1981, it was declared a national historic-artistic monument. Construction began in the mid-15th century and continued into the 16th century in the Gothic style. One façade of the sacristy is designed in the Plateresque style and attributed to Hernán Ruiz the Elder. The church thus brings together Gothic architectural history and a Plateresque detail.

The Ermita Virgen del Castillo, dating from the 14th century, stands in Plaza de la Catedral. The Pilar de los Llanos is a Renaissance monument from the 16th century and forms part of a livestock resting place on the Cordel of the Cañada Real Soriana. For centuries, it served as a watering place and as the centre of the San Agustín fairs. The two sites offer different historical perspectives: a chapel in Plaza de la Catedral, and a monument linked to livestock and fairs.

During Semana Santa, hundreds of Nazarenos, bearers and residents, along with trumpet and drum bands, process through the town’s main streets. Semana Santa has been recognised as a Festival of National Tourist Interest in Andalusia; the exact format of the annual processions may vary. The folk play La Vaquera de la Finojosa is also part of the town’s cultural history: it began in 1998, and the entire town was brought onto the stage for the production.

A Museum of Everyday Life

The Museo EtnolĂłgico is housed in a manor house dating from the late 18th century, which once belonged to a wealthy farming family from Hinojosa del Duque. Its exhibition areas cover agriculture, livestock farming, industry and folk religion. Through these themes, the museum showcases everyday life in Hinojosa del Duque and its region. More than 2,000 objects have been donated or loaned by residents. The different areas range from work and production to popular religious culture, offering visitors a broad view of local and regional history.

A Town Walk or Winter Wildlife Watching

The Ruta de las Ermitas is a historic walking route through the town. It is 7 kilometres long and classed as easy. The route is signposted, and there is a car park at its starting point. As route details and infrastructure may change, check them locally again before setting out.

The Ruta del RĂo Guadamatilla has a different focus: it runs alongside a century-old dehesa of holm oaks. Thousands of cranes can be spotted along the route in winter. The two routes therefore offer different options for planning a trip: a historic walk through the town or seasonal wildlife watching in winter.

Regional Cuisine

Characteristic traditional dishes from Hinojosa del Duque include Olla de Carnaval, Sopa dorada and Lechón. The extensive dehesas are also associated with livestock farming, which produces ham, sausages and other products from Iberian pigs. These include Lomo de orza, Chorizo and Morcilla. These dishes and products offer two different insights into the region’s food culture: traditional meals and products from dehesa livestock farming.

Plan Your Stay Around Your Interests

If you are looking for hotels in Hinojosa del Duque, first decide which aspects of the destination you would like to focus on during your stay: architectural history and Semana Santa, everyday life at the Museo EtnolĂłgico, a walk through the town or winter crane watching. The time of year is especially relevant for crane watching; also check the information about the Ruta de las Ermitas before setting out.
