When planning a stay in Sotogrande, several themes stand out: the Guadiaro River estuary, Puerto Sotogrande with its beach and marina, and the town’s polo history.

Nature at the Guadiaro Estuary

At the heart of Sotogrande Costa lies the Guadiaro River estuary, designated a natural area by the Junta de AndalucĂa in 1989. Its wetland provides a resting place for 144 different migratory bird species on their journeys. The species present vary by season, so nature watching is not limited to a single time of year.

The estuary has two boardwalk routes: one along Paseo del Parque and another on Calle Jaime el Conquistador, heading towards the marina and Puerto Sotogrande. As access may change temporarily, check local access conditions before your visit. This makes it easier to include a nature walk in your travel plans without assuming that the two routes form a continuous connection.

Beach and Marina

Puerto Sotogrande Beach is a 500-metre-long urban beach within the marina, with moderate surf. Facilities include watersports equipment hire, accessible access walkways, showers, and toilets for people with reduced mobility. Beach services may vary seasonally.

With 1,382 berths, Puerto Sotogrande is Andalusia’s largest marina; the number of berths and facilities may change. The marina has dozens of restaurants serving Mediterranean and international cuisine, and the dining options may change over time. You can also stroll through navigable canals, past artificial islands and along the waterfront in the harbour. The beach and harbour walks offer different experiences: the coast and surf on one hand, and the marina’s maritime design on the other.

Activities on the Water, by Bike and on the Golf Course

Sotogrande offers opportunities for kayaking along the coast and for diving courses. Availability depends on providers and conditions. At Puerto Sotogrande, you can also consider the sailing school run by the Real Club Marítimo Sotogrande (RCMS), as well as trips on sailboats, catamarans or motorboats—for time at sea or fishing. Confirm courses and providers before your trip.

Cycling also offers different ways to explore: in Sotogrande, you can discover Andalusia by bike on roads or off-road, including on routes by the sea and through nature parks. As route conditions and organised activities may change, check your planned route in advance. A golf course opened in 1964 and is located between the Sotogrande Marina and the Guadiaro River.

Polo in Sotogrande

The first polo field in Sotogrande was established in 1965. The Santa María Polo Club holds the annual Mansion 49 Torneo Internacional de Polo. Check the dates and programme if the tournament is important to your travel dates. The club has seven polo fields, four of which are considered “World Class”; club facilities may change. The long history of polo and the annual competition together provide a distinctive sporting feature to consider when planning your trip.
