Roche is shaped by the Atlantic coast, an extensive coastal pine forest and several walking trails. For trip planning, the beach, forest and trails offer different points of interest. The Faro de Roche also adds a historical connection to coastal defence.

Playa de Roche and Coastal History

Playa de Roche has lifeguard towers, a first-aid station, beach cleaning, access walkways and toilets. Some of these services may vary seasonally. A designated zone with set usage times is provided for surfing; the regulations may be managed seasonally.

The history of the coast is also part of Roche’s character. The Faro de Roche was created by converting a 16th-century watchtower. This tower was part of the coastal defence line. The lighthouse thus connects a present-day coastal landmark with the watchtower’s former defensive function.

Pinar de Roche: Pines Between Dunes and Sandy Areas

Pinar de Roche lies on the Atlantic coast of Andalusia, immediately beside the settlement of the same name in the municipality of Conil de la Frontera, in the province of Cádiz. The coastal pine forest lies between dunes and sandy areas and covers approximately 689.18 hectares. Its size and location make it a distinctive landscape feature alongside the beach.

The Dehesa de Roche walking trail offers a closer look at the vegetation. It leads from stands of sea juniper and savin vegetation to a pine forest that was planted in 1860 and has since become naturalised. The trail description thus covers both the vegetation along the route and the history of this planted forest.

Two Walking Trails of Different Lengths

The linear Dehesa de Roche walking trail is 5.8 kilometres long, is rated easy and starts at Mirador de los Enebros. It ends at Área Recreativa Roche. The also-linear Río Roche walking trail is considerably shorter, at 1.6 kilometres; it is also rated easy.

The Río Roche trail runs parallel to the riverbed of the Río Roche and connects Puerto de Conil with Urbanización Roche. The Fartet is found in the area of this trail: a small fish with ray-shaped fins that is classified as critically endangered. The trail description therefore provides information about both its route and the local natural environment. As trail conditions can change, check them before setting out.

Trails Above the Calas de Roche

At the Calas de Roche, a network of trails crosses Mediterranean scrubland above the slope. The trails make it possible to enjoy walks with panoramic views of the entire beach. This sets the description of this stretch of coast apart from the two linear walking trails in the Pinar and Río Roche areas.

Cala del Aceite can be reached via tracks that branch off the CA-4202 road near the mouth of the Río Roche. This access point is a specific landmark for trip planning: the turn-off is near the river mouth and the tracks lead to the cala.

Roche offers a range of landscape and trail experiences: visitor facilities at Playa de Roche, pine forest between dunes and sandy areas, shorter and longer linear walking trails, and the network of trails by the Calas. The historic watchtower of the Faro de Roche adds a glimpse of the coast’s former defences.
