Prado del Rey combines archaeological sites and historic buildings with natural heritage within the Los Alcornocales and Sierra de Grazalema natural parks. If you are looking for a hotel for your stay, you can plan around the town’s main attractions: Iptuci and local history, the salt pans, a walking route or a festival. For recurring events, it is worth checking the dates and programme in advance.

Iptuci and the history of the town

The archaeological site of Iptuci lies within the municipal areas of Prado del Rey and Arcos de la Frontera. Since 2002, it has been protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural in the archaeological zone category and included in the General Catalogue of Andalusian Historical Heritage. Evidence of settlement dates from the Late Neolithic to the Middle Ages. This includes Colonia Ituci Virtus Iulia, founded in Roman times.

Visible remains include an almost square defensive wall, massive semicircular towers and the remains of a barbican. A necropolis with hypogea carved into sandstone adds to the archaeological picture. The surviving defensive remains are open to the public. Iptuci therefore offers both a long history of settlement and tangible architectural evidence.

Various buildings in the town also offer insight into different periods. The Paseo de los Azulejos runs through Prado del Rey’s main streets. Its tiled panels present local history and events. The walk thus connects the townscape with local stories without requiring you to focus on any one historical period.

The Pósito de Labradores was built in 1790 as a granary. Its original structure, with load-bearing walls, masonry supports and groin vaults, is preserved. The parish church of Nuestra Señora del Carmen was built between 1830 and 1840 in the Neoclassical style, as a basilica with three naves. Its ornamental altarpiece comes from the Church of the Encarnación in Arcos de la Frontera.

The Centro de Interpretación Etnográfico Sierra de Cádiz has two exhibition levels and three rooms for screenings and audiovisual content. Its permanent exhibitions cover Iptuci, the White Villages archaeological route, the Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park and local customs. If you are planning a visit, check the visitor arrangements locally.

Salt pans and walking routes

The Salinas de Iptuci are inland salt pans fed by saline springs. They were first used in Phoenician times and reached their peak during the Roman period. The Salinas de Iptuci route runs mostly through the Los Alcornocales Natural Park and the municipal area of Prado del Rey. It passes the salt pans, where visitors can stop for a guided tour. Check the options for such a tour before travelling; conditions on the route may also change.

A route description dated 19 December 2023 gives the Camino al Cerro Verdugo a length of 1.4 kilometres, a low difficulty level and a duration of about 45 minutes. For the Ruta Salinas, the same dated description lists a 4.5-kilometre circular route taking approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes. According to these figures, the Ruta Salinas is longer and takes more time; trail conditions may change.

Festivals, crafts and wine

Local traditions reveal other sides of Prado del Rey. The Concurso Nacional de Cante por Serranas has been held since 1972 and is listed in the register of Andalusian Intangible Cultural Heritage. The RomerĂa de San Isidro Labrador travels from the church to the Dehesa de Hortales in an ox-drawn wagon. Carts, floats and riders accompany the procession, along with music and dancing. Check the dates and programme if you would like to plan your trip around one of these events.

The Feria de la Miel takes place in October. Its programme includes technical conferences, product exhibitions, a food competition, tastings and festive activities. Here, too, up-to-date information on dates and the programme can help you plan. Another local tradition is leatherworking: it began in the 1960s and developed into the town’s main economic activity.

Prado del Rey also has a tradition of viticulture and winemaking. Today, this makes it possible to sample various local wines that recall the historic Pajarete wines. This lets you add a taste of local cuisine to your interests in history and culture.

Landscape and getting there

The municipal area includes natural heritage within the Los Alcornocales and Sierra de Grazalema natural parks. The Salinas de Iptuci route runs mostly through Los Alcornocales; from the Mirador de las Lomas, visitors can take in the surrounding landscapes. Prado del Rey is directly accessible by road. When planning your stay, you can therefore consider cultural attractions, a route and views of the landscape as different ways to shape your visit.
