The entire municipality of Grazalema lies within the Sierra de Grazalema Nature Park. The park has around twenty marked hiking trails showcasing its natural and cultural diversity. This approximate number gives an idea of the scale of the trail network. In the town, the historic centre offers a different focus: lanes, squares and traditional architecture shape its character. If you would like to combine nature and local history, the trails and town centre offer different themes for your stay.

Hiking Trails and Views

The Camino de los Charcones is a walking trail that runs parallel to the source of the RĂo Guadalete and connects Grazalema with the Puerto del Boyar. It follows a former livestock route that is now regularly used by Grazalema residents. The Calzada Medieval is another historic route: it is a medieval extension of a two-thousand-year-old road that runs through the Manga de Villaluenga.

Las Canteras or Los Areneros are listed as starting points for the El Pinsapar hiking trail; both are a few kilometres from Grazalema. A permit from the authorities is required for this trail. As access information may change, check the latest guidance and permit requirements before setting out.

The Mirador de los Peñascos offers a 360-degree view of the Peñón Grande and the Valle del Guadalete. The Ruta hasta la Ermita del Santo is a roughly 30-minute walk along a path. At its destination, you can see an image of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and panoramic views of the town of Grazalema. The destinations therefore differ both in their viewpoints and in the type of route.

Townscape, Architectural History and Textiles

The Casco antiguo de Grazalema is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural in the Conjunto Histórico category. Narrow cobbled lanes, whitewashed houses, tiled roofs with two sloping sides and squares shape the historic town centre. Its designation as a Conjunto Histórico draws attention to the townscape as a whole, not just to individual buildings.

The Iglesia de la Aurora was built between 1769 and 1800 with donations, tithes and first fruits from the town. Its architectural features include a rectangular floor plan, a dome with eight star-shaped skylights and a circular choir gallery. These details give you specific points of reference if you are interested in the town’s architectural styles.

The Museo Textil Grazalema is housed in a 19th-century factory building. Historic machinery illustrates the traditional blanket-making process, from washing the raw wool to the finishing stage. The steps on display offer insight into the manufacturing process, rather than focusing only on the finished textile. If you are planning a museum visit, check the current visitor arrangements beforehand.
