El Puerto De Santa María brings together coastal landscapes, natural areas and a wide range of cultural attractions. During your stay, you can focus on beaches, trails and nature activities, or on archaeological, religious and literary sites. Other highlights include regional cuisine, a bodega tour and the catamaran service to Cádiz.

Coast and natural areas

The city is located in the Bay of Cádiz Natural Park. Its natural environment includes 200 hectares of pine forests, the 773-hectare marshlands of Los Toruños and 16 kilometres of coastline, mostly made up of low-lying sandy beaches. El Puerto De Santa María also has more than 15 kilometres of beaches with fine, golden sand. The beaches and varied natural areas shape the city’s landscape.

The endorheic complex of El Puerto De Santa María comprises the Salada, Juncosa and Chica lagoons, also known as de la Compañía. They were protected as Integral Zoological Reserves in 1987. Alongside the coast and marshlands, the lagoons are another distinctive part of the natural landscape.

Nature activities and cycling routes

Los Toruños Metropolitan Park offers miniature train rides, activities with bicycles and roller skates, water sports, ecological gardens and hiking. The municipality also has nine signposted cycling routes. The Coto de la Isleta Environmental Education and Nature Activities Centre is also located in the municipality and serves as an entrance to the Bay of Cádiz Natural Park. Activities there include water sports and other sports, as well as climbing on a climbing wall, archery and a water park.

Archaeology, architecture and literature

The archaeological site of Castillo de Doña Blanca was continuously inhabited from the 8th century BC until the arrival of the Romans on the Iberian Peninsula at the end of the 3rd century BC, in connection with the Second Punic War. The site is significant for the study of protohistory on the Iberian Peninsula and in the Mediterranean region, particularly the Phoenician presence in Cádiz. Admission is free; access is limited to the permitted number of visitors for the safety of visitors and the structures. Check the latest visitor information before your visit.

The Ruta Sacra is a suggested route through historically and artistically significant churches, monasteries, chapels and hermitages in El Puerto De Santa María. The original floor plan of the Iglesia Mayor Prioral dates back to the 15th century; the building phase also includes the Gothic Portada del Perdón. Castillo de San Marcos is a fortified church and has been protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural since 1920.
