El Gastor brings together historic buildings and craft traditions with striking mountain ridges and hiking trails. Its festivals also offer a glimpse into Gastoreño culture, from the Guisote dish to the Gaita gastoreña and flamenco. When planning your visit, it is worth distinguishing between places that are part of the area year-round and events tied to specific festival days or months.

History and Architecture in El Gastor

The Iglesia de San José is a neoclassical church dating from the 18th century, built in 1747. Its structure was reconstructed after being plundered during the Spanish Civil War. Another historic building houses the Museo de Usos y Costumbres José María El Tempranillo: the museum is in a house from the late 18th century, whose original structure and walls have been preserved.

Older history comes to light at the Dolmen del Charcón, also known as the Tumba del Gigante. This megalithic burial site dates from the Bronze Age and lies on the slope of Tajo Algarín at an altitude of 830 metres. The dolmen is considered the largest in the province of Cádiz. El Gastor thus brings together traces of different eras: a Bronze Age tomb, a house from the late 18th century and a church built in 1747.

El Molino is also one of the municipality’s buildings. It was built in 1932, renovated in 2000 and is currently used as a meeting and exhibition space. Check whether access is possible before visiting.

Mountain Ridges and Hiking Trails

El Gastor’s characteristic streets are narrow and steep; white façades dotted with hundreds of colourful flowerpots define their appearance. In the surrounding landscape, Tajo Algarín reaches 1,060 metres and Las Grajas 1,040 metres. The difference between the two elevations is 20 metres.

Hiking trails in the natural area of Algarín and Las Grajas near El Gastor include the Ruta del Dolmen del Gigante. The Sendero Zahara-El Gastor, by contrast, has a clearly specified starting point outside the town: it begins near the junction of Calle de los Corrales and Calle del Portezuelo, where the CA-9114 road to Ronda begins. If you are planning a hike, check current trail conditions locally.

Other activities complement the hiking options: caving is possible in Susto Cave. The proximity of El Gastor-Zahara Lake allows for water sports such as kayaking and canoeing. These options range from trails in the natural landscape and cave exploration to activities on the water.

Guisote, Crafts and Festivals

Guisote gastoreño is a local dish made with asparagus and garlic. At the traditional Guisote competition, residents and visitors gather in Plaza de Andalucía to sample this dish from Gastoreño cuisine. As this is a recurring event, check the date for the year you plan to travel.

The Gaita gastoreña, a wind instrument made from a bull’s or cow’s horn, is part of the local craft tradition. A wooden piece made from oleander or walnut, with a small reed, is fitted to the end of the horn. Pleitas are woven items made from palm leaves or esparto grass, crafted using three to seventeen strands. Items made from them include espadrilles, mats and bottle covers.

The Certamen de gaita gastoreña takes place during the Corpus Christi celebrations, when participants demonstrate their skill at playing the instrument. Corpus Christi in El Gastor is recognised in Andalusia as a festival of tourist interest. Residents and visitors come together for the celebrations, with streets, altars and decorative elements accompanying the procession. The Certamen flamenco also takes place in October: it is dedicated to a great master of flamenco guitar and brings together leading figures in contemporary flamenco. Annual festival dates may vary, so check the relevant calendar before travelling.
