The Museos de Terque offer a two-hour guided route through five venues: the Museo Etnográfico, the Museo Provincial de la Uva del Barco, La Modernista, the Museo de la Escritura Popular and the Cueva de San José. Its duration makes it easy to plan the route as a standalone activity. Check the latest visiting arrangements before you arrive. The venues cover different themes, from everyday and economic history to written records and cultural events.

Museums and their themes

The Museo Etnográfico is housed in a late-19th-century town house owned by the Ayuntamiento de Terque. Through its exhibition rooms, visitors can learn about historic trades, domestic life, and the religious, social and political life of Terque and its Comarca. The exhibition perspective therefore encompasses life at home as well as trades and public life.

The Museo Provincial de la Uva del Barco focuses on the parral-growing culture of AlmerĂa province and the history of cultivating and marketing table grapes, known as Uva del Barco. The museum also features a parral designed as an educational and engaging visitor area. Visitors can walk there and observe how the parral changes over the course of the year. Check the latest access arrangements before your visit.

La Modernista is a century-old textile shop and, as part of the Museos de Terque, is dedicated to the history of clothing and fabrics. The Museo de la Escritura Popular offers another way to explore the past: it and its archive are housed in the Casa de los Yebra and today preserve more than 10,000 letters and documents of this kind. Alongside agriculture and textiles, written records are also a central focus.

Inaugurated in 2011, the Cueva de San José serves as a cultural venue for the Ayuntamiento de Terque, hosting exhibitions, concerts and conferences. Check specific event dates if you would like to plan your visit around a programme.

Architecture and historical traces

The Iglesia de Santiago Apóstol is built in the Mudéjar style. A transverse arch separates its main chapel from the nave; the wooden roof is an unadorned limas structure. The church therefore offers distinct architectural features to explore, including its style, spatial layout and roof construction.

Cisterns and remnants of the former Muslim fortification remain on Cerro de Marchena. Tombstones bearing Kufic script are also associated with the hill. These traces complement the museum visits with evidence of the historic fortification and an epigraphic record.

Townscape and practical planning

Terque lies on the eastern edge of the Parque Natural de Sierra Nevada. A tourist walking route recommends exploring the town on foot to see its town houses. This recommendation draws attention to the built townscape; the museums and historical traces offer other, thematically distinct ways to discover Terque.

For museum visits, a free public car park at the entrance to the town is recommended. It is about 200 metres from the Museo Etnográfico. Check the latest parking arrangements before you arrive. If you are mainly planning to take the guided route, allow for its two-hour duration and confirm the latest visiting arrangements. The latest access arrangements for the parral should also be checked in advance.
