Tabernas: Desert Landscape and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Tabernas
Tabernas is defined by themes including its desert landscape, hiking and cycling routes, cultural heritage, and traditional dishes. If you are looking for hotels in Tabernas, you can use these themes to help plan your trip: would you like to focus on trails, architectural history, or regional cuisine?
Desert landscape and nature conservation
The Desierto de Tabernas has been a protected natural area since 1989. Eroded badlands with ravines and wadis shape the landscape. Its special botanical and faunal value includes rare species and the endemic Tabernas wallflower, Euzomodendron bourgaeanum. This means the natural theme extends beyond the visible landforms to include distinctive plant and animal life.
The entire Sendero La Serrata PR-A 481 trail lies within a ZEC area of the Natura 2000 network. The trail forms an ecological corridor between the Sierra Alhamilla natural area and the Desierto de Tabernas natural area. Connecting these two natural areas is a distinct aspect of the route, alongside its course through the landscape.
Trail profiles for hiking and cycling
The nearly flat Sendero del Desierto PR-A 269 runs through the Rambla valleys of the Desierto de Tabernas. Check trail conditions locally. Another hiking route starts and ends at the municipal tourist information office and leads to the Rambla de los Molinos, which joins the Rambla de la Sierra.
Specific route data is available for the Tabernas–Lucainena de las Torres cycling stage: it is 22.9 kilometres long and includes 350 metres of ascent. The route runs along the foot of the northern slope of the Sierra Alhamilla through arid terrain and Rambla valleys, past olive groves and cortijos. The trail information varies: the nearly flat profile is the focus for the Sendero del Desierto, while the cycling stage is described by its length and ascent. Technical route data may be updated; check with the relevant route authority before planning.
The church, castle, and history of the landscape
The Iglesia parroquial de Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación is designated a Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC) monument. The Mudéjar church has three naves and Renaissance- and Mannerist-style doorways. Inside are the image of the Virgen de las Angustias and, in the chapel of the Virgen del Carmen, an altarpiece made of white and green marble by D. Policampo in 1865.
The Castillo de Tabernas is also a municipal monument designated a BIC. A paved path beside the municipal sports pavilion leads to the castle; the monument overlooks the town of Tabernas, the desert, and the surrounding sierras. Since January 2026, it has been temporarily closed to visitors for archaeological work and restoration. Check before your trip whether the closure is still in effect.
The Centro de Interpretación Terrera Ventura y Desierto de Tabernas explains both the geological formation of the desert and the Copper Age society of the Los Millares type. This society lived at the Terrera Ventura settlement in the 3rd millennium BC. The centre’s themes therefore bring together the history of the landscape and that of an early society.
Traditional cuisine and guided experiences
Traditional Tabernas cuisine includes Olla de trigo, sopa de ajo almeriense, Gazpacho, cocido de morcilla, Gachas, Remojones, Ajillo de papas, Caldo colorao, and Gurullos. Gurullos is the local name for the bread-based dish. These names give you a concrete insight into the region’s culinary tradition.
On the Ruta en 4x4 por el Desierto de Tabernas, guided drives within Tabernas travel through Rambla valleys and a variety of landscape formations. At stops along the way, there are explanations of geology, history, landscape, or film. Almazara Castillo de Tabernas offers a guided tour of natural and traditional olive oil production, as well as tastings of various extra virgin olive oils. Check the availability of both experiences before your trip.
