Serón can be explored through several distinct themes: the history of mining and the railway, historic buildings, trails and astronomy. When looking for a hotel in Serón, you can first consider which of these themes you want to shape your trip. The routes, sights and events offer different starting points for planning.

Trails and viewpoints

The Vía Verde del Hierro runs along a disused railway line dating from 1894 through the municipality of Serón. The route has been adapted for non-motorized use, whether walking or cycling. Its length of 11.8 kilometers and its gentle gradients describe two different aspects: the distance gives an idea of its overall scope, while the gradient describes the route’s profile. The Sendero Local Las Menas is laid out differently: it is a circular route through the mining settlement of Las Menas that passes its most prominent points. The Sendero panorámico de Serón first leads to the Balsa de la Alconaiza and then to a viewpoint in the Alconaiza area. It is located on a former threshing floor and has an information board.

Mining and railway history

Las Menas is a mining settlement with buildings of considerable architectural merit. These include the Ermita de Santa Bárbara, a hospital, offices, a workers’ pavilion, workshops, and several houses for managers and technicians. The different types of buildings give the settlement a distinctive industrial-history focus.

The old railway facilities along the Vía Verde also tell the story of a different use. The station building, locomotive shed and a warehouse with a loading ramp have been renovated to accommodate complementary facilities such as a restaurant, an exhibition and concert hall, and a museum. This brings two different aspects into focus: the architecture of a mining settlement and railway buildings renovated for new facilities.

Buildings and local history

Castillo de Serón was built in the 13th century in the province of Almería and served a defensive function during the Nasrid period. It offers panoramic views of the Almanzora Valley and the Sierra de las Estancias. At the Iglesia de la Anunciación, building history meets a distinctive architectural detail: the church dates from the 17th century and was declared a national historic-artistic monument in 1983. The central nave features a Lima-Bordón roof framework with eight-pointed star motifs and square latticework.

The Ermita de los Remedios is a neoclassical building from the 19th century. Its rectangular floor plan and single nave describe the building’s form; the main chapel houses the image of the Virgen de los Remedios. Calle Real is an important landmark for finding your way around the historic center: it is the main street that encircles the center. Another vantage point is by the Ermita Virgen de la Cabeza. From there, the view extends over the Vega of Serón, which occupies the river deposits of the Almanzora Valley. El Aljibe, a natural hot-water spring, is also located near the settlement of Fuencaliente.

Astronomy and local events

The Planetario de Serón offers live educational presentations on astronomy, geosciences, the history of astronomy and cultural astronomy. The program also includes observations of the night sky with telescopes and binoculars. Visitors can view constellations, planets, the Moon when visible, and deep-sky objects. This gives the visit a different focus from historic buildings or hiking trails.

The Feria del Jamón has been held on the first weekend of July since 1995. It includes a national ham-carving competition and public tastings of freshly sliced products. Jamón de Serón has a protected geographical indication. The meat-products industry has been developing in Serón since the 18th century; this longer industry history is a distinct aspect alongside the Feria’s specific program. If the event is a key part of your trip, check the dates for your chosen travel year.
