Retamar stretches as a narrow, elongated strip for about three kilometres from north to south; from east to west, the area is only a few hundred metres wide. Its layout runs parallel to the Rambla del Agua and ends at a promenade about 600 metres long that slopes down towards the Mediterranean. The city beach Playa de Retamar borders the residential area of the same name and lies next to the promenade. This orientation brings the destination’s coastal character into focus and helps you assess Retamar as a place to search for a hotel.

Beaches and Promenade

Playa de Retamar has a 600-metre coastline of pebbles and coarse sand. If you take the beach’s surface into account when choosing a destination, you’ll find a different coastal setting here than at a sandy beach. Playa de Retamar has designated play areas and a dedicated nautical area. Facilities may change over time, so check their current status before visiting.

El Toyo beach is another coastal feature of Retamar: it was restored in 2005 for the Mediterranean Games. El Toyo is considered suitable for water sports, although strong surf is one of its characteristic features. Sea conditions vary by day and season. If you’d like to combine your stay with water sports, take these changing conditions into account when planning.

A promenade lined with palm trees and native plants runs alongside El Toyo beach. From Playa de Retamar, there are also views of Cabo de Gata. The coastal views, promenade and varied beach surfaces give you different ways to explore the area according to your interests.

Green Spaces and Activities

Parque de El Toyo-Retamar forms a three-kilometre-long green belt, with a width that varies from 60 to 600 metres. Its features include trees, shrubs and lawns, as well as paved paths and shaded pergola areas. The park has a 2,300-metre cycle path, children’s play areas and areas for roller skating. Elevated pedestrian bridges offer wide panoramic views of the coast. So Retamar’s description centres not only on the beach, but also on green spaces and opportunities for outdoor activities. The condition of parks and facilities may change; check current conditions before visiting.

Cycling Route Between the City and the Coast

The Almería-El Toyo Anthercas route links urban and coastal sections for cycling. It passes through planted areas, along promenades and on coastal paths. One planted section includes wooden walkways and viewpoints. The route also runs alongside the artificial lake at the Auditorio and passes bars in Plaza del Mar. Its varied surroundings help you understand the route without conflating the urban and coastal sections. Route conditions and access may change; check before setting out.

Seaside Dining

Near El Toyo beach, Plaza del Mar offers food and entertainment. Bars in this area are also mentioned along the cycling route. These are distinct from the bars at Playa de Retamar, which serve typical dishes featuring local fish. No specific menus or individual establishments are identified. Rather, these details point to two different ways to enjoy food and drink during a coastal stay.
