Discover Pulpí: Geode, Coast and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Pulpí
Pulpí combines natural and cultural heritage with a remarkable geological attraction: the Geoda de Pulpí. You can choose from a range of interests when planning your trip, from protected coastal landscapes to church architecture and local exhibitions. If you’re looking for hotels in Pulpí, it helps to decide which of these you’d like to explore during your stay.
Coast and protected nature
The Isla de Terreros e Isla Negra Natural Monument comprises two small volcanic islands near the Almería coast, off San Juan de los Terreros. Isla de Terreros is home to one of the most important seabird breeding grounds in Almería province. The Pulpí–San Juan de los Terreros hiking trail starts in Pulpí and runs along the Mediterranean coast. Beaches, steep cliffs and picturesque seascapes shape its route.
The Sierras de Almagrera, de los Pinos y el Aguilón ZEC protected area extends partly into the municipality of Pulpí. Its landscapes include steep coastal cliffs, small beaches and coves. The area also provides a refuge for one of the last well-preserved populations of the Spanish tortoise on the Iberian Peninsula. The Mirador del Apartadero–Playa Cocedores route passes through the protected Fondos Marinos del Levante Almeriense marine environment, known for its islets and underwater biodiversity. Route details may change; access and conditions in the marine environment can vary seasonally. Check the latest information before planning your trip.
The beaches described here also have very different characteristics. One beach is 150 metres long, has crystal-clear water and forms a natural pool. A developed beach is 250 metres long and is known for its golden sand and shallow, calm waters. A fossil beach of geomorphological and palaeontological interest has a mix of pebbles, coarse sand and rocks; the surf is usually moderate. Coastal conditions and services can change seasonally, so it’s worth checking local information before visiting the beach.
The Geoda de Pulpí and its exhibitions
The Geoda de Pulpí is located within the municipality of Pulpí and was discovered in 1999. Large gypsum crystals cover it; its transparency and state of preservation make it a natural heritage site unique in the world. About eight metres long and two metres high, it is an impressive geological attraction. It is also the world’s largest visitable geode—a distinctive point of interest for anyone interested in minerals and geological formations.
The permanent “Sala de Luminiscencia” exhibition displays 1,000 samples of fluorescent minerals and can be visited as part of a guided tour. The permanent “Pintor Pedro Antonio” exhibition focuses on something different: it features paintings by Pedro Antonio Martínez, an artist from Pulpí. Mineralogical exhibits and the work of a local painter are thus presented as distinct exhibition themes.
Architecture and local cultural heritage
The Iglesia de San Miguel was built in 1801 during the reign of Charles IV and is listed in the General Catalogue of Andalusian Historical Heritage. Two features define its architecture: a rectangular floor plan and a single-nave layout, meaning the church has one main nave. Its construction date and basic design offer two concrete points of reference for understanding the church’s historical and architectural context.
The Centro del Hábitat Rural de Pulpí conveys local identity and collective memory through objects, bilingual display panels in Spanish and English, and audiovisual media. Its exhibits include tangible and intangible cultural heritage associated with traditional agriculture and livestock farming. Groups can visit the centre by appointment. Confirm your appointment again before travelling.
The Espacio Escénico Pulpí is a venue for a range of performing arts and is used for public events. If an event is central to your travel plans, check the specific dates, as the programme may change.
