Guazamara: Art, Heritage and Festivals
Accommodation in Guazamara
Guazamara combines visual art and local heritage with two festivals held at different times of the year. When planning a trip, you can weigh up a culture-focused visit against checking the festival dates in May or October.
Art at the Sala Expositiva Françoise Cervantes
The province’s 2025 museum guide lists a permanent exhibition of 24 oil paintings and seven sanguine drawings. Sanguine drawings are made with reddish chalk, so two different artistic media are represented at the Sala. Before your trip, check whether the exhibition is still on display in this form. The 2025 guide says that visits must be arranged in advance, so arrange your visit ahead of time. The Sala is located at Centro de Usos MĂşltiples, C/ El Llano, S/N, 04619, Guazamara-Cuevas del Almanzora, AlmerĂa. Check the address before setting out, too.
The church and washhouse as heritage
The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Rosario and the Lavadero de Guazamara are part of Guazamara’s heritage. Lavadero means washhouse, providing a different cultural point of interest from the church or the exhibition at the Sala. Those interested in local heritage will find three clearly distinct subjects here: a church, a washhouse and visual art.
The RomerĂa Guazamara–Los Guiraos in May
The RomerĂa Guazamara–Los Guiraos began in 1996 and is usually held on the third Sunday in May. The three-day festival includes a culinary program featuring, among other things, paella, potatoes cooked with garlic and grilled sardines. The dishes served may vary from one edition to another. At midnight, the RomerĂa ends with a large chocolate event featuring churros; the exact festival program may also change. If you plan to travel for this celebration, check the dates for the relevant edition rather than relying solely on its usual May timing.
The Fiestas de Guazamara in October
The Fiestas de Guazamara are held on October 7 in honor of the Virgen del Rosario; they usually take place on the weekend closest to that date. To choose specific travel dates, check the dates for the relevant year. The festival begins with a procession of giants and big-head figures, accompanied by a band. The program also includes a lunchtime event at the village’s bars and an award for the best dishes. Individual events may change, so check the program for the relevant edition as well.
Guazamara in the route plan
The route through Cuevas del Almanzora’s noteworthy districts passes through the inland districts and includes Guazamara. It is designed as a one-day plan for the morning. Alongside the individual cultural and festival topics, this provides an overall framework for planning the day. Route details may change, so check the current route before basing your plans on it.
