Devotion to Coromoto and the Locainas

The image of the Virgen de Coromoto is kept at the Santuario Nacional de Nuestra Señora de Coromoto in the state of Portuguesa. The shrine was built at the place where the Virgen de Coromoto is said to have appeared to the Indigenous man Coromoto for the second time. Devotion and the traditionally recognized site of the apparition are closely connected here. If you choose religious history as the focus of your trip, this gives you a specific cultural point of reference for your journey to Portuguesa.

At a festival performance in 2024, around 150 Locainas from Portuguesa welcomed Minister Villegas with dancing, music, and drums, wearing their distinctive colorful costumes. The Locainas are considered an expression of the cultural identity of the state of Portuguesa and a tradition that has existed for more than 200 years. The specific performance illustrates music, movement, and clothing, while the tradition’s long history provides a further historical context. This allows you to consider a single festival performance and the history of the tradition as distinct aspects.

In Guanare stands Casacoima, a building from the colonial period that was declared National Architectural Heritage in 1977. The colonial classification and the designation belong to two different periods: the first describes the building’s historical origins, while the second gives the year it was recognized as architectural heritage. Alongside religious tradition and the Locainas tradition, Casacoima adds architectural history to the cultural picture of Portuguesa.

Venezuela: Coast, Culture, and Landscape

The wider destination of Venezuela also offers other natural and cultural themes. Morrocoy National Park is located in the coastal region of the state of Falcón. Its marine and coastal ecosystem covers more than 32,000 hectares. The landscape features mentioned include Cerro Chichiriviche, cayos, shallow-water areas, and mangrove channels.

The tourist experience in Morrocoy begins at the piers: traditional Peñero boats depart from there for the cayos. The national park is also home to the open Cueva del Indio at Cerro Chichiriviche, which can be reached by traveling through mangrove channels. For your orientation, the boat trip from the piers to the cayos and the journey through the mangroves to the cave can be considered distinct experiences. The park’s area indicates the scale of the entire region, while these routes point to specific destinations.

Coro and Caracas offer other cultural highlights. Coro was founded in 1527 and has around 602 historic buildings. The campus of the Ciudad Universitaria de Caracas brings together numerous buildings and functions in a clearly organized ensemble featuring masterpieces of modern architecture and visual art. These examples represent different architectural emphases: in Coro, the number of historic buildings shapes the picture, while in Caracas, the interplay of the campus, architecture, and visual art stands out.

Canaima National Park, in southeastern Venezuela, is marked by a yet larger scale. It extends along the border with Guyana and Brazil over three million hectares; about 65 percent of its area is covered by tepui table mountains. Thus, the wider destination of Venezuela ranges from historic buildings and an architectural campus to expansive coastal and mountain landscapes.
