Durazno: Nature on the Río Yi and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Durazno
Durazno offers a variety of starting points for a trip: a trail along the Río Yi, a distinctive sandstone formation in La Paloma, and museums with collections on the department’s history. The landscape and cultural attractions each offer a different focus. When planning your trip, you can decide based on whether you are most interested in riverbanks, natural formations, animal species, or historical artefacts.
Along the Río Yi: the “Riberas del Río Yi” Eco Sendero
The “Riberas del Río Yi” Eco Sendero is 3,500 metres long and takes visitors through natural areas along the Río Yi’s riverside forest. It connects the beach in the Puerto de los Barriles neighbourhood with the Paraje Rebollo area, which has a beach and sandy areas. The trail was officially inaugurated in 2024. Its length and named endpoints give the riverside experience a clear framework: at one end is a beach in a neighbourhood, and at the other is an area that also has a beach and sandy areas. If you would like to include a nature trail in your trip, the Sendero is a specific starting point for this focus.
Sandstone and microclimate in La Paloma
The Gruta de La Llorona in La Paloma is a sandstone formation more than 20 metres high. It formed in a marine environment during the Lower Devonian, about 380 million years ago. Its size and geological age give the site a different character from the trail along the Río Yi: here, the focus is on how the rock formed. The surroundings are also shaped by distinctive natural conditions. The steep terrain and humidity create a special microclimate in which native trees, ferns, and culandrillos grow. Thus, both geological formation and plant life are among La Paloma’s distinctive natural features.
The BioParque de Durazno offers another perspective. It has extensive open-air enclosures and more than 80 native and exotic animal species. The wildlife complements the natural themes of the riverside, rock formation, and plant life. If you would like to include different aspects of nature in your travel plans, you can consider these focuses separately: landscape and vegetation are the main features in La Paloma and along the Río Yi, while the BioParque focuses on animal species.
Museums, collections, and architectural history
The Museo Histórico Casa de Rivera is located in the former residence of General Fructuoso Rivera; the building has served as a museum since 1992. It houses the Durazno Department Archive, with an archive of documents, an archive of voice and music, and an image archive. The latter comprises several thousand items of the cultural heritage of the department and the country. The collection thus brings together different forms of archival material: documents, voice and music, and images are all part of its holdings.
The Museo Militar Tte. Gral. Pablo Galarza focuses on historical paintings, old uniforms, military equipment, furniture, and documents from that period. The Museo Batalla del Río de la Plata (Cuartel Paso del Rey) has its own focus. Its military history collection covers the history of the Cuartel de Sarandí del Yi and includes weapons, uniforms, and documentary photographs. The museum also commemorates the stay at the site of crew members from the German battleship Graf Spee; its collection includes objects and photographs from that period.
Architecture and heritage history take centre stage at the Museo Palacio del Dr. Emilio Penza Berlingieri. It is a spacious residence furnished in the Belle Époque style. The building was declared a National Historic Monument in October 1996. In La Paloma, the Iglesia Sagrado Corazón de Jesús is also an architecturally noteworthy building. The Museo Claudio Silveira Silva complements these cultural themes with around a hundred works on display. The range therefore extends from archival holdings and military history collections to architecture and art.
