Tumbes can be explored from two perspectives: at Cabeza de Vaca, the focus is on the Qhapaq Ñan, the site museum, and the Huaca del Sol; in the city of Tumbes, mosaics and a Sunday ceremony offer their own cultural highlights. When planning your stay, consider whether you would like to focus on archaeological themes or cultural experiences in the city.

Archaeology at Cabeza de Vaca

At Cabeza de Vaca, you can take guided tours of the site museum, the Qhapaq Ñan space, and the Huaca del Sol. The Museo de Sitio Cabeza de Vaca “Gran Chilimasa” has two permanent exhibition rooms. One of them displays around 200 archaeological pieces from Cabeza de Vaca and other archaeological sites in Tumbes. The exhibition thus presents pieces from the site alongside objects from other sites, offering a broader view of the archaeology of Tumbes.

The second room displays photographs of the Inca road network, or Qhapaq Ñan. A tour of the archaeological zone’s visitor area complements the museum visit. Cabeza de Vaca holds a strategic position within the Qhapaq Ñan project, which studies the Inca roads. The photographs and tour offer two perspectives on the subject: the road network as a larger project and the archaeological area as a specific place. In this way, the Qhapaq Ñan provides a common thread between the exhibition room and the tour.

The tour continues to the Huaca del Sol, which was built of adobe bricks and stone. Another feature of the archaeological landscape is an eight-kilometer-long path made of river pebbles that connects Cabeza de Vaca with the sea. The contrast between the individual structure and the long pebble path shifts the focus from construction methods to the extent of the archaeological landscape.

Getting to the Archaeological Zone

The distance from Plaza Mayor de Tumbes to the Cabeza de Vaca archaeological zone is given as 6 kilometers, or 10 minutes by private car on a paved road. Check this information locally before setting out.

Cultural Experiences in the City of Tumbes

Every Sunday, a ceremony to raise the national flag takes place at Plaza Mayor de Tumbes. It is accompanied by the national anthem and the anthem of Tumbes, as well as a parade featuring representatives of the armed forces, schools, and various municipal institutions. The regular weekly schedule and participation by different institutions give the event its distinctive character.

Paseo Jerusalén in the city of Tumbes offers a different highlight: its mosaics depict the birth, life, passion, and death of Jesus Christ. While the Sunday ceremony at Plaza Mayor brings together a recurring sequence of flag-raising, anthems, and a parade, the mosaics depict these religious themes in images. Your stay thus offers a clear contrast between a Sunday event and a permanent cultural attraction.
