Cardalito and the Coastal Destinations of the Province of Contralmirante Villar
Accommodation in Cardalito
Cardalito and its geological connection
Natural oil seeps were observed in the past in El Cardalito. This also gives Cardalito a place in geological history. The coastal and nature attractions of the Province of Contralmirante Villar offer a different focus: beaches, tidal pools, and a reminder of the history of oil. You can consider both interests when planning your trip: the specific connection to El Cardalito and the province’s landscapes. If you are looking for a hotel in Cardalito, consider whether the area’s historical connection or a particular coastal or nature attraction should shape your travel plans.
Playa Acapulco within the district
A rocky outcrop about 60 meters high lies at the southern end of Playa Acapulco in the District of Zorritos. Playa Acapulco has warm, blue-green water, a narrow strip of light-colored, fine sand, and moderate waves suitable for swimming. The average temperature is stated to be 24 to 29 °C and is influenced by the El Niño Current. The rocky outcrop creates a striking contrast in elevation.
Coasts and nature in the Province of Contralmirante Villar
Playa Bonanza is in the Province of Contralmirante Villar. At low tide, you can observe various marine species in small rock pools and snorkel directly from the beach without special equipment. The beach is accessible from the main road via a short walk; check current access conditions before visiting. Compared with Playa Acapulco, the difference lies in the activity and timing: at Bonanza, observations are explicitly tied to low tide, while at Playa Acapulco, the moderate waves suitable for swimming are the main attraction. Whether you would rather swim or observe marine species at low tide can therefore be a practical criterion for choosing between them.
The Hervideros Hot Springs are in the Province of Contralmirante Villar, in the District of Zorritos at Monte Huacura. They consist of small pools of salty mud that seem to be constantly boiling. The pools look distinctly different from beach and rock scenery: salty mud and the impression of boiling shape the landscape here.
Another connection to oil can be found in the Province of Contralmirante Villar at Plazuela Faustino Piaggio: its wooden tower commemorates the drilling of the first oil well in South America on November 2, 1863. This brings two different historical connections together. Natural oil seeps were observed in El Cardalito; at the plaza, the tower commemorates a drilling event with a specific date. This connection adds a historical remembrance to Cardalito’s geological association, without suggesting that the two events took place in the same location or involved the same kind of connection to oil.
Playa Punta Sal in Canoas de Punta Sal is also in the Province of Contralmirante Villar. It comprises three areas: Punta Sal Chica, Playa Punta Azul, and the Punta Sal Grande beach resort. Punta Sal Grande is specifically described as a beach resort; the overall name Playa Punta Sal also includes the other two areas. When comparing the names, it helps to think of the beach as divided into three parts and not to equate Punta Sal Grande with all of Playa Punta Sal.
