Lago Sauce, also known as Laguna Azul, lies at an altitude of 650 m on the shore of the town of Sauce. The lake is located in the buffer zone of Cordillera Azul National Park. When planning your trip, it may help to first distinguish between water activities, walking trails and excursions in the surrounding area.

At Lago Sauce: water, trails and camping

You can kayak and swim at the lake. Walks and trekking are possible around Lago Sauce. If you want to focus on water activities, you will find different options here than on a walk in the lake’s surroundings. Camping is possible on the shore in the Sektor 2 de Mayo.

Canoes, rowboats and motorized aluminum boats are used for local transport on Lago Sauce. This is distinct from boat trips that may be part of a tour program.

Tours at Ecoparque La Soñada

Ecoparque La Soñada is located in the Sektor El Caño, next to the outflow of Laguna Azul in Sauce. The night tour starts at Sauce’s main pier: participants travel by boat to the Ecoparque, accompanied by a guide, and use flashlights to observe nocturnal animals in the forest. If you plan to take this tour, confirm the tour details before your visit.

The Ecoparque’s full-day program includes a visit to the “Hijos de Nuestra Tierra” exhibition, Mina de Sal Rosada Amazónica and Jardín de las Orquídeas. It also includes a chocolate workshop and a kayaking tour on the lagoon. While the night tour focuses on observing animals in the forest, the full-day program combines several visits and activities. Check the current tour conditions before making plans.

Cascadas Pucayacu and the trail from La Primavera

The walk from CaserĂo La Primavera to the waterfalls takes 30 minutes and follows a trail through humid tropical premontane forest. Cascadas Pucayacu is also in the buffer zone of Cordillera Azul National Park.

The two time estimates have different starting points: the approximate hour refers to the distance from the district of Sauce, while the 30 minutes refers to the walk from CaserĂo La Primavera. Trail conditions can change, so check the state of the trail before your visit.

Getting there and finding your way

One route to Lago Sauce goes from Puerto LĂłpez on the banks of the RĂo Huallaga, crossing the river for 200 m by ferry or balsa. The crossing is estimated to take 20 minutes. This estimate applies to this section of the river, not the entire journey. Road conditions and journey times can change, so check current conditions and the time required before setting out.

Other places in the destination of Sauce

In addition to Lago Sauce, the destination of Sauce has other distinct places and offerings. Termales Don Grimaldo is a thermal bath for relaxation in the district of Sauce. It offers access to thermal pools and a guided walk featuring medicinal black healing mud; the offering also includes handcrafted welcome drinks. Check the applicable conditions before booking.
