Rioja combines a central urban square with natural destinations in the surrounding area. You can choose different focuses when planning your trip: everyday life and festivals at the Plaza de Armas, the forested Río Uquihua, or karst and spring landscapes. Crafts, traditional dishes, and community-based experiences are also part of the picture. If you are looking for a hotel in Rioja, these themes can help you decide in advance what you are most interested in during your stay.

Nature Between Cave and River

The Cueva de Cascayunga is located near Rioja, a few minutes from the village of Perla de Cascayunga. The karst cave lies within a mountain forest ecosystem in the Selva Alta and the Zona de Recuperación y Conservación de Ecosistemas “Naciente del Río Negro.” Several limestone galleries are approximately 15 meters high and 3 meters in diameter; stalactites and stalagmites shape their forms. The various areas provide a natural habitat for bats, spiders, and other insects. Geological formations and cave habitats are equally central to the nature experience here.

The Naciente del Río Negro lies south of Rioja. At the spring, water emerges directly from the earth between rocks and lush vegetation. Hiking is possible along both banks of the river through primary forest. If you are weighing up nature destinations, this is a river-and-forest option; at the Cueva de Cascayunga, the focus is on limestone galleries and the habitat inside the cave.

The Corredor Turístico Quillosisa is an approximately 500-meter-long footpath along the forested Río Uquihua. Along the way, you can see typical plants of the region, including Tangarana, palms, Huaba, Shimbillo, Cetico, Aguaje, Renaco, and Quillosisa. Its approximate length offers a concrete indication of the route, while the plant life along the river is its distinctive feature. The corridor thus offers a different connection with nature than the spring or the cave.

City Life, Festivals, and Crafts

The Plaza de Armas de Rioja is a central urban square where history, tradition, and everyday life come together. It hosts cultural activities, craft markets, and festivals such as the Semana Turística de Rioja and Fiestas Patrias. If you are interested in city life, several cultural events come together here in one central location.

The Carnaval Riojano is also part of the local festival tradition. During the celebration, streets and squares are filled with music, dances, and vivid colors. The festivities include water games, comparsas, and the felling of the Yunza tree. If a festival is important to your travel plans, check the specific event dates in advance.

At the end of the Corredor Turístico Quillosisa, there is an area where crafts made from Bombonaje straw, drinks, and traditional dishes are sold. Some families along the corridor offer community-based experiences, including making crafts, local products, or traditional dishes. A visit to the corridor therefore combines nature and regional plants with crafts and food—two different interests at one nearby excursion destination.

For getting around the city, there is also a specific route to the Casa del Artesano de Rioja: it is 1.1 kilometers, or about five minutes by private car, from the Plaza de Armas in the city of Rioja. The distance and travel time refer to this route and this mode of transportation.

Compare the location of each hotel with your own plans; the places and activities mentioned offer different points of reference.
