Anapia: Island Culture and Lake Views
Accommodation in Anapia
For a trip to Anapia, access by boat, the route to the plaza, and community-based rural tourism are important planning considerations. Local customs, fishing, and traditional foods are also part of the experience.
Getting to and around Anapia
Anapia can be reached by boat from the Punta Hermosa landing in the district of Unicachi. The town is 16 km from the landing. At your destination, a 550-meter footpath leads from the Anapia Island landing to the Plaza de Anapia; it takes about 15 minutes to walk. Distance and walking time may vary depending on conditions. For planning purposes, these are two separate legs: the approximate walking time applies to the route to the plaza, while boat schedules and availability should be confirmed locally. The island district’s tourism services include boat rentals provided by the Asociación de Transportistas en Lancha y/o Botes del distrito insular de Anapia. Check in advance whether rentals are currently available and what local arrangements apply.
Wiñaymarka, islands, and lake views
The Islas Anapia y Yuspique tourism resource area is in the southern basin of Lake Titicaca, also known as Wiñaymarka. The area offers views of Wiñaymarka Lake. The Wiñaymarca archipelago comprises ten islands, including Isla Anapia and Isla Yuspique. Nearby Yuspique Island is home to a community-protected vicuña breeding station with more than 60 animals; the population may change.
Community tourism and activities
Anapia Island has facilities dedicated to community-based rural tourism. This offering includes a visit to Yuspique Island; confirm current arrangements before your trip. Sport fishing is offered in the Anapia–Yuspique tourism resource area. Check in advance whether the activity is available for your travel dates, and ask about equipment, permits, and local procedures.
Customs, food, and patron saint’s festival
The residents of Anapia Island preserve their own local customs, and fishing is one of their main activities. Traditional foods include chairo, pesq'e, q'ispiño, quinoa mazamorra, tarwi salad, wallaq'e, watia, and tayacha; these dishes are sampled and prepared. Availability depends on the hosts and the season. If you would like to try a particular dish or take part in preparing it, ask about options for your visit.
Anapia Island’s patron saint’s festival honors the Señor de Exaltación and takes place on September 14. The program may vary. If you are planning your trip around the festival, confirm the date and program in advance. Handwoven goods are sold as souvenirs in the Wiñaymarca archipelago; ask locally about current options.
