Piura brings together religious traditions, historic architecture, coastal activities and designated natural areas. If you’re looking for a hotel in Piura, you can choose a focus for your trip based on specific places and experiences: for example, the history of Catacaos, water sports along the coast or the distinctive landscapes around Laguna Shimbe.

Culture and History in Piura

Semana Santa has been celebrated in Catacaos since 1540. Every Palm Sunday, a procession carrying Christ on a live white donkey travels from the Carmen de Monte SullĂłn Chapel along Calle Comercio to Iglesia San Juan Bautista. The tradition takes place on a set date each year; details of the procession may vary.

Calle Comercio is located in the monumental zone of Catacaos, which Peru’s Ministry of Culture declared part of Peru’s historic heritage in 1988. About 30 historic houses remain along the street. The procession route, the street and the church provide tangible points of reference for Catacaos’ historic heritage.

Iglesia San Juan Bautista is a colonial church; its first building was constructed in 1547. Those interested in architecture and religious history will find it a long-standing complement to Semana Santa and the historic streetscape.

Chulucanas ceramics are another distinctive cultural feature: they have had a protected designation of origin since 2006. Production takes place mainly in La Encantada, near Chulucanas, within the Piura region. Aypate offers another historical connection: the site is linked to the Qhapaq Ñan, which connects Ecuador and Peru along the route toward Cusco.

Coastal Activities and Wildlife Watching

Máncora Beach can be reached on foot, by taxi or by mototaxi from the town of Máncora. As these access details may vary, check the current situation before your visit if they are important to your plans.

Kitesurfing, kayaking, windsurfing and snorkeling are possible at Playa Vichayito. Between August and November, turtles, dolphins, sea lions and whales may be spotted there. This seasonal window is especially relevant if you’d like to plan your trip around the possibility of seeing wildlife.

Activities at Playa El Ñuro include swimming, kayaking, surfing, selected deep-sea fishing and windsurfing. Visitors can also swim freely with green sea turtles (Chelonia mydas) in their natural habitat, close to shore and without a boat. The two beaches therefore differ in the activities mentioned and in their distinctive wildlife-watching opportunities.

Caleta Cabo Blanco is known for a world record in deep-sea fishing. Its connection to deep-sea fishing adds a distinct dimension to the coast’s water sports and wildlife-watching themes.

You can consider the coastal towns according to different priorities: Vichayito offers a seasonal window for possible wildlife sightings, while swimming with turtles near shore is a distinctive feature of El Ñuro. At Máncora Beach, the listed ways of getting there from town offer another practical point of reference.

Protected Areas and Landscapes

Banco de Máncora is known for its high fish diversity and endemism and is recognized through the Reserva Nacional del Mar de Grau. This recognition is set out in Decreto Supremo N° 003-2024-MINAM. The Manglares de San Pedro de Vice were designated Peru’s 13th Ramsar site and are located in the province of Sechura, in Piura.

Laguna Shimbe is part of a complex of more than 30 lagoons known as the Huaringas or Huarinjas. Part of the lagoon lies within the Bosques Montanos y Páramos Chicuate Chinguelas private protected area, belonging to the Comunidad Campesina Segunda y Cajas. Its connection to the larger lagoon complex and its partial overlap with the protected area give the landscape a clearly defined geographic context.

Visitors to Laguna Shimbe usually take part in baños de florecimiento accompanied by a “maestro curandero.” If this is a focus of your visit, the customary accompaniment is important information about the practice.

There are several ways to decide what to focus on during your trip: historic places and traditions, specific coastal activities, or natural areas with their own names and significance. You can choose your focus before looking for a hotel in Piura.
