Oxapampa: Discover Cultural Heritage and Nature
Accommodation in Oxapampa
Oxapampa can be explored from two different perspectives: cultural landmarks and traditional wooden houses define the city, while the broader Oxapampa destination also includes natural attractions in the surrounding area. When looking for a hotel, you can first consider which of these themes matter to your trip. The locations and excursion spots below offer specific points of reference without treating a city visit and natural attractions in the district as one and the same.
Cultural Heritage and Architecture in Oxapampa
An obelisk stands in the Plaza Principal. It has a four-sided structure and an octagonal base decorated with wood carvings. The figures depicted are Santa Rosa de Lima, a Yánesha person, an Austro-German settler, and Father Bardo Bayerle. The obelisk was built in 1959. Its base shape and carvings give the monument a distinctive form; the figures show which representations come together at this site.
Another cultural landmark is the Iglesia Matriz Santa Rosa de Oxapampa, which has been declared part of the Nation's Cultural Heritage. It was built between 1939 and 1940 under the direction of Don Juan Tino BalarĂn and designed by the architect Otto MĂĽller. By contrast, the traditional Barrio tradicional Miraflores neighborhood draws attention to residential architecture: it is considered one of Oxapampa's oldest neighborhoods and is known for its typical Austro-German wooden houses. The monument, church, and neighborhood thus offer different points of reference if you are interested in the town's architectural and cultural history.
The Plaza Principal also serves as a point of orientation in the broader Oxapampa destination: most sightseeing tours to nearby districts start there. This applies to tours to the districts and does not mean that every tour starts at the plaza.
Natural Attractions in the Broader Oxapampa Destination
Oxapampa is considered a core area of the Oxapampa–Asháninka–Yánesha Biosphere Reserve, recognized by UNESCO in 2010. At the district level, Oxapampa is one of the reserve's eight districts and is described as representative because of its role in nature conservation and sustainable development. These protected-area connections frame the nature theme differently from the cultural landmarks in the city.
In Oxapampa District, the San Alberto tourist-use zone is part of Yanachaga Chemillén National Park. It is located in the Selva Alta and covers 180 hectares. From the control post, the El Cedro Trail winds through dense mountain forest and takes approximately one and a half hours. For planning purposes, this approximate duration is a different kind of reference from the area given for San Alberto: it describes a route, not the size of the area.
Other nature and leisure spots in the broader destination include Catarata RĂo Tigre, the MARIPOXA butterfly garden, and the Parque EcobiolĂłgico de Oxapampa. Catarata RĂo Tigre is located in the hamlet of La Cañera, in the district and province of Oxapampa in the Pasco region; it is 18 kilometers from the city of Oxapampa. At Manantial de la Virgen, visitors can swim in natural pools and hike along nature trails. A guided visit to the butterfly garden takes approximately 20 minutes and is led by its staff. The butterfly garden and the Parque EcobiolĂłgico offer an educational and relaxing experience for all ages.
Weighing Your Travel Options and Priorities
If you want to focus on cultural landmarks and wooden buildings, plan your trip around Oxapampa itself. Natural attractions such as San Alberto and Catarata RĂo Tigre, on the other hand, are points of interest in the broader destination and should be considered separate excursion destinations. For Catarata RĂo Tigre, the stated distance of 18 kilometers helps distinguish it geographically from the city's attractions; on its own, it does not indicate how long the journey will take.
Two different modes of transport to Oxapampa from Cerro de Pasco are listed, each with its own estimate: the interprovincial bus journey is given as 10 hours and 30 minutes, while the trip by private car is listed as 10 hours over 385 kilometers. Each estimate applies to the specified mode of transport and does not guarantee current travel times. Check the bus schedule before departure; if driving, also take current road conditions and travel times into account. This lets you plan your journey separately from your choice of priorities at your destination.
