Chontabamba combines distinctive buildings with glimpses of Yanesha culture and the landscape. When planning your trip, you can focus on different things: the Plaza Principal and its church, guided experiences, or humid forest and viewpoints. The time estimates also vary considerably—from a short walk to a hike lasting several hours.

Plaza Principal and Architecture

At the center of the Plaza Principal de Chontabamba stands an obelisk topped with a waterfall and an image of Christ. The plaza lies within the Oxapampa-Asháninka-Yánesha Biosphere Reserve, which UNESCO recognized in June 2010. Here, a specific structure connects with the wider landscape of the reserve.

The Iglesia de San Pedro de Chontabamba is also located at the plaza. The wooden church was built in 1988 and preserves the region’s architectural style. Religious or patron-saint events take place at the church. If you are traveling for a specific date, check event dates in advance.

Collections and Yanesha Iconography

The Museo Vintage Años Dorados is located in the district of Chontabamba and is a wooden house museum in the typical Tyrolean style. Its collections date from the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s. The museum offers a different focus from the church: its collections span several decades.

Parque Temático El Wakon is connected to the district of Chontabamba through the community of Tsachopen. Tours interpret 32 Yanesha iconographies, and also explain their emotional and cultural symbolism and feature traditional dances. Images, their meanings, and dance are distinct elements of the visitor experience. If you are specifically planning a guided activity, check its current availability in advance.

Humid Forest and Views

The 23-hectare Fundo Margarita has been in operation since 1996. Its landscape includes humid forest, native trees, and orchids. Mirador La Florida offers views of the Chontabamba Valley, the surrounding landscape, and the city of Oxapampa. Access is estimated at a 400-meter route and about five minutes by private car. Access and facilities at the viewpoint could still be improved—a practical point to consider when planning your visit.

Another nature stop is Tunqui Cueva in the district of Chontabamba, about five kilometers from Oxapampa. The humid limestone cave has numerous stalactites and a figure known as La Bruja. The cave and the viewpoint offer different landscape impressions: formations inside a cave on the one hand, views of the valley, landscape, and city on the other.

Guided Experiences and Trip Planning

In the municipality of Chontabamba, a guided tour through the interior of Casa al Revés takes about 13 minutes. Staff help visitors take photographs and videos. In the Bosque de Churumazú private nature reserve, a guided hike for environmental interpretation is estimated to take about three and a half hours. These time estimates represent two very different types of visit; the hike takes considerably longer than the house tour.

Visitors can also watch the processing of sugarcane products, including milling in a hydraulically powered trapiche and the subsequent distillation. The drive from Puente Suárez to the Plaza Principal de Chontabamba by private car is estimated at nine kilometers and about 13 minutes.
