Excursions from La Torre vary in focus. One goes to the mammal salt lick at Colpa Solitaria; “Wild Lagos La Torre” lists three lagoons as destinations; another excursion includes gathering seasonal produce on a traditionally farmed property. If you’re looking for hotels in La Torre, these specific interests can help guide your initial trip planning. First consider whether animals, bodies of water or the harvest best suit your itinerary.

Excursion to Colpa Solitaria

The excursion goes to the mammal salt lick at Colpa Solitaria, where collared peccaries, tapirs and deer are often found. The focus is therefore on observing mammals. However, frequent occurrence does not guarantee that you will actually see the animals during your visit; individual sightings are uncertain. If you’re especially interested in these species, Colpa Solitaria is a specific point of interest, but not a promise of an encounter.

Three lagoons with “Wild Lagos La Torre”

The “Wild Lagos La Torre” tour visits Cocha Montes Lagoon, Pato Cocha Lagoon and Lagarto Cocha Lagoon. Unlike the excursion to Colpa Solitaria, this tour focuses on three lagoons as destinations. This gives you a clear basis for comparison: one tour focuses on mammals at a salt lick, while the other visits the named lagoons. You can use this to decide which of these themes you’d like to include more in your trip.

Seasonal farm harvest

Another excursion includes gathering seasonal Amazonian fruits such as cupuaçu, arazá, peach palm, cassava, banana, pineapple and cacao on a traditionally farmed property. Spices such as palillo and sacha culantro are also included. The focus here is on seasonal produce and gathering it, not on wildlife watching or lagoon destinations. Since the selection depends on the season and participation should be confirmed before your trip, check in advance which produce is scheduled to be gathered during your visit and whether participation is possible.

AMTUSET and the community initiative

AMTUSET is the Association of Residents of the RĂo La Torre for the Sustainable Development of Ecotourism in Tambopata. Historically, the association traces its origins to twelve mestizo settler families in the area around the mouth of the RĂo La Torre where it meets the Tambopata. The families decided to preserve a section of forest where they had previously hunted and felled trees, and to pursue ecotourism and experiential tourism. The initiative thus combines a specific decision to preserve the previously used forest with a focus on tourism. Alongside the individual excursion destinations, this community perspective offers another way to understand La Torre: it makes clear the role of the residents and their commitment to sustainable ecotourism.
