The Ciudad Sagrada and its visitor route

The nearby Ciudad Sagrada de Caral-Supe is a 5,000-year-old archaeological site and is considered the oldest center of civilization in the Americas. It comprises six large pyramid-shaped structures. Their scale and great age give the visit a clear archaeological focus.

The visitor route passes monumental pyramid structures, residential complexes, and temples. The route includes a path accessible to people with motor disabilities or limited mobility.

Visitors may tour the Ciudad Sagrada only accompanied by a local guide or cultural interpreter authorized by the Zona Arqueológica Caral. Guided groups are limited to ten people; take this limit into account when planning a visit together.

Access and seasonal route

After 23 kilometers, on the Caral–Minas Ámbar route, turn toward the pedestrian bridge at the level of the Centro de la Ciudad de Caral. Access to the site is on foot across a pedestrian bridge and through the Bosque de Huarangos; from there, a marked path leads to the visitor center in about 20 minutes.

When planning, distinguish between the described access via the bridge and marked path and the alternative Route B through the riverbed: this is available only during the dry river months, from mid-May to mid-November. Check conditions before traveling.

Landscape and visitor center

The nearby Ciudad Sagrada de Caral is located on a dry alluvial desert terrace above the Río Supe valley. The nearby Bosque milenario de huarangos is a remnant of the former riparian forest that stretched along both banks of the valley. During the Caral civilization, this forest was respected, preserved, and regularly maintained.

The visitor center has parking, accessible restrooms, a ticket office, a restaurant, and a gift shop. Handicrafts and tourist information to help plan your visit are also available.

The “Túnel de la ciencia y centro de información” presents scientific and technological developments, as well as Caral’s social organization and everyday life, in an accessible educational setting. This complements the focus on monumental structures with themes from daily life and the development of the Caral civilization.

Food and the “Vianderas de Caral” program

A description from 2019 identifies the “Vianderas de Caral” program as an offering for visitors and tourists, featuring typical regional dishes and desserts. It lists women from the centro poblado de Caral as participants. The modules mentioned there were made from organic materials such as caña brava and caña Guayaquil, as well as stone and clay; their architectural style followed that of some buildings in the urban centers of the Caral civilization.
