Discover Quillabamba: History, Cocoa, and River Landscapes
Accommodation in Quillabamba
Quillabamba brings together historical connections, a museum dedicated to the Amazonian-Andean region, local produce, and activities along the Río Vilcanota. When planning your trip, it helps to distinguish between attractions by location: some are in the city, while others are nearby. This lets you choose how to balance culture and city history, coffee and cocoa, or river landscapes and activities.
City History and Fiesta
The historic city of Quillabamba was founded on July 25, 1857. The Fiesta de Quillabamba takes place from July 25 to 29 to mark the anniversary of the political founding of La Convención Province, which dates back to 1857. The founding of the city and the occasion for the provincial festival are two distinct historical reference points. If you plan to include the festivities in your trip, check the specific event dates.
The Plaza de Armas is described as the city’s most important public square. Its appearance is defined by typical gardens, palm trees, and ornamental plants. The municipal tourist information office is also located at the plaza: it is at Jr. Espinar N° 306 and is open Monday to Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and from 2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Opening hours may change; check them before your visit.
Museum and Regional History
The Museo Amazónico Andino Qhapaq Ñan – Quillabamba is a permanent, public, nonprofit cultural institution founded in 2008. Its permanent exhibition covers the geography and biodiversity of the province’s ancestral territories, as well as the cultures of the Amazonian-Andean region that live there today. The exhibition thus focuses on both the landscape and present-day cultures.
The collections also offer insight into regional history. They cover, among other topics, the Inca period and include archaeological finds from several sites in the region: Choquequirao, Espíritu Pampa, Vilcabamba, and Vitkus. Those interested in the area’s past and cultural diversity will find a range of subjects brought together here.
Coffee, Cocoa, and Local Produce
Coffee, cocoa, and fruit are among Quillabamba’s most important local products. Chuncho cocoa has a distinctive history: it is a native crop domesticated by the local community. The largest growing areas were established more than 100 years ago. This long history of cultivation adds a specific historical context to cocoa as a local product.
The Escuela de Café at the Planta Industrial de COCLA offers specialized courses in tasting specialty coffee. Visits to the facility must be arranged in advance with the administration; confirm the contact details before your visit. The Planta Industrial de COCLA is located at Av. Edgar de la Torre N.° 1353. According to the route information, it is about two kilometers, or an eight-minute drive, from the Plaza de Armas. The walk is listed as about one kilometer, or 20 minutes. Both figures are estimates.
The Río Vilcanota and Nearby Activities
Quillabamba is considered the main gateway to the Megantoni Protected Area. The Río Vilcanota also shapes the range of activities available, and location is an important consideration. Within the city, promotional and development activities for canoeing are held on the Maranura–La Balsa section. Seasonal conditions and providers may change; ask locally about current options.
The Balsa Grande, Balsa Chica, and El Encuentro areas are also located near Quillabamba, along the Río Vilcanota. Activities there include riverside walks, kayaking, and swimming. Water conditions vary by season; get up-to-date local advice before taking part in any river activity. These nearby riverside areas therefore differ from the urban Maranura–La Balsa section in both location and the activities mentioned.
The Balneario de Sambaray is located near Quillabamba on the banks of the Río Vilcanota, amid lush tropical scenery. Canoeing and walks are possible there. The municipal zoo is described as a center for caring for rescued wildlife, as well as for conservation and tourism education. From Plaza Grau in Quillabamba, Sambaray can be reached by mototaxi via a paved road; the estimated journey is five minutes and 2.5 kilometers. Road conditions may affect the route.
