In Espinar, archaeological sites meet highland landscapes with striking rock formations. The sites are located in different districts of Espinar Province, so when planning your stay, you can take both cultural highlights and specific access routes into account.

Protected Area and Highland Landforms

The Tres Cañones Regional Conservation Area covers 39,485.11 hectares in the districts of Coporaque and Suyckutambo in Espinar Province, in the Cusco region. Its conservation objectives include biodiversity and natural landscapes, as well as cultural identity and archaeological monuments. Natural and cultural heritage are therefore both part of the area’s conservation mandate.

The rock formations of Chiluyo are located in the Chiluyo sector of the Echocollo community, in the Suyckutambo district, at an altitude of 4,825 meters in the Puna. The forms described include rocks that resemble mushrooms and prehistoric animals. Chiluyo is part of the Suyckutambo tourist route of the Asociación de Turismo Vivencial Arco Punku. You can check the latest route information in advance when planning your trip.

Archaeological Sites and Cultural Heritage

Muyuqhawa is located in the Alto Pichigua district and was declared Cultural Heritage of the Nation on September 2, 2024. The K'ana settlement also shows Inca occupation and is located on a plateau. The structures described include circular and rectangular buildings, terraced areas, walls, and chullpas. The site includes residential, ceremonial, burial, and defensive areas, chronologically attributed to the Late Intermediate Period and the Late Horizon.

The María Fortaleza–Taqrachullo Monumental Archaeological Zone is located in the Chaupimayo community in the Suyqutambo district. It was declared Cultural Heritage of the Nation of Peru on April 27, 2010, by Resolución Directoral Nacional N.° 954-2010. Its architectural remains are attributed to the Middle Horizon, the Late Intermediate Period, and the Late Horizon.

In terms of chronology, both descriptions mention the Late Horizon. María Fortaleza–Taqrachullo also has remains from the Middle Horizon, while Muyuqhawa is also attributed to the Late Intermediate Period. The chronological references therefore differ, although both include the Late Horizon.

On August 15, 2024, it was declared Cultural Heritage of the Nation by Resolución Viceministerial N° 000234-2024-VMPCIC/MC. In the community’s own description, Espinar is called the “Land of the K'ana Nation”; Espinar’s culture and traditions are also highlighted.

Access Routes to Help You Plan

From Puente Central, a 14.24-kilometer unpaved road leads to the María Fortaleza–Taqrachullo Monumental Archaeological Zone. The drive takes about 25 minutes by private car. The description of the Ecowasi rock paintings gives a different route: an asphalt road runs seven kilometers from the main road in the Laucamayo sector; the journey takes about ten minutes.

The times given are approximate estimates. Check current road conditions before setting out, especially for the unpaved route. When choosing a hotel in Espinar, the archaeological sites and landforms can offer different focal points for your stay.
