Mollendo: Beaches, Castillo Forga and Coastal Culture
Accommodation in Mollendo
Beaches and Coastal Measurements
The coast of Mollendo can be viewed both as a long stretch and as individual beach sections. Playa Mollendina extends for approximately 9 km from the first beach to Sombrero Grande. The first beach is 268 m long and about 75 m wide in the middle section; its width varies with the movement of the sea. The 9 km describes the stretch between the named endpoints, while the measurements of 268 m and around 75 m refer to the first beach. Thus, the larger coastal stretch and an individual beach with its own measurements provide two different points of reference.
There are food outlets, parking lots, showers, changing rooms and toilets at the first and second beaches. Seasonal availability of these facilities may vary. This practical information applies to the two named beaches, while the approximate 9 km indicates the greater extent of Playa Mollendina.
Beach Route and Sea Views
The Costanera at the third beach is a road open to traffic and part of the beach route. It connects all the beach sections as far as Valle de Tambo. Visitors exploring Mollendo by car can use this connection as a guide: it links the beach sections to a named endpoint beyond the coast. The road route thus complements the orientation provided by individual beach measurements with a broader context.
The Muelle Turístico Mollendo offers a different view of the seascape. It has relaxation areas and views of the coastal landscape; its facilities may change. The beach route and the relaxation areas offer different ways to experience the coast: one by following a road connection, the other by spending time at a place overlooking the sea.
Architecture and Culture in Mollendo
Castillo Forga lies between the second and third beaches. Construction began in 1924; the exact year of its completion is unknown. The castle is designed in an eclectic style and has concrete balconies overlooking beaches No. 1 and No. 2 on the Arequipa coast. Its location, construction history and views of the beaches represent different aspects of the building: it stands between two beach sections, has a clearly stated construction start date and looks out toward two other coastal points.
The former Mollendo railway station also helps visitors find their way around town. It is by the sea, at 3.5 m above sea level, in the lower part of the city and opposite the first beach. The former railway station has been established as Mollendo's cultural center. It has exhibition halls for cultural events such as press conferences, concerts, anthologies, and art and photography exhibitions; it also houses the Chiribaya Culture Museum. Individual exhibitions and events may vary. The station's location and cultural use offer two different points of reference: the first beach is a landmark across from it, while the cultural center connects the former railway station with events and a museum.
Coastal Cuisine and Travel Planning
Restaurants in Caleta de Catarindo serve seafood products that are part of Mollendo's cuisine. Individual restaurants' offerings may change. Cuisine is one way to round out a stay that can also be experienced through beaches, architecture, cultural events or the coastal route. When planning your trip, you can prioritize according to your interests: the beach sections and their facilities offer a different focus from Castillo Forga and the cultural center, while the Costanera connects the beach sections via a road open to traffic.
