Cotahuasi combines an Andean-colonial townscape with churches from different historical periods and a settlement landscape shaped by terraces. If you are looking for a hotel in Cotahuasi, it helps to plan separately for the town itself and destinations in the surrounding area: churches, the plaza and viewpoints are in town; visiting the waterfall and hot springs requires travel from Cotahuasi.

Townscape, Churches and Plaza

The Andean-colonial character of the town includes typical two-story houses with projecting wooden balconies and courtyards, as well as corrugated-metal gable roofs. Two churches illustrate different historical periods: the Iglesia Matriz de San Martín de Tours dates from the 17th century, was built on Inca foundations and is among the early colonial churches. The Iglesia de La Inmaculada Concepción dates from 1796 and preserves valuable paintings from the Arequipa school.

The Plaza de Armas is triangular and relatively small. At its center is a small fountain with rosettes and two bronze bowls. The plaza is also home to the Tuturuto Dionisio, a one-of-a-kind piece brought from Portugal in 1932. Together with the churches and characteristic houses, it creates a townscape where colonial and Andean influences stand side by side.

Terraces and Protected Landscape

Cotahuasi lies within the Reserva Paisajística Subcuenca del Cotahuasi. The protected area was established on May 23, 2005, by Supreme Decree No. 027-2005-AG. Its core zone encompasses the entire province of La Unión in the Arequipa region. Within Cotahuasi, agricultural terraces shape the settlement landscape; you can view them from designated viewpoints without access restrictions.
