Reef, Mangroves, and Hilly Landscape

Discover San Andrés and Providencia through their nature, island connections, and culture. A specific starting point is Old Providence McBean Lagoon National Natural Park, located on Providencia and Santa Catalina. Providencia covers 17 km² and is the second-largest island in the department. Part of the reef barrier that protects Providencia’s coast lies within the park’s marine area. Since 2000, the park has been part of the Seaflower Biosphere Reserve.

The McBean mangroves cover 40.7 hectares, protect the coast, and provide a habitat for marine species. While the reef barrier lies in the marine area, the mangroves also make the coastal fringe a focus as a habitat. The park also includes Iron Wood Hill, a steep-sided hill. The view across the protected area therefore extends from the marine and coastal environment to a distinctive landform.

Exploring by Water and on Land

At Old Providence McBean Lagoon National Natural Park, marine ecosystems can be explored by small boat, while land areas can be traversed on foot. These two options draw attention to different parts of the park: its marine ecosystems or its land areas. Snorkeling and birdwatching are among the listed ecotourism activities. If you plan to take part in either activity, check current park conditions before your visit.

Cayo Cangrejo (Crab Cay) is a small island where colorful fish can be observed while snorkeling. Those particularly interested in marine life will find a distinctive natural highlight here.

Lovers’ Bridge and Island Culture

Lovers’ Bridge connects Providencia and Santa Catalina and provides a crossing to Santa Catalina. An opening in the middle lets small boats pass through. The bridge dates from the 19th century. This structure thus brings together the connection between the islands, the passage of small boats, and a historical date.

The Chub Festival brought together local culinary traditions centered on chub fish (Kyphosus spp.), artisanal fishing, and sailing in catboats. The reported program also included a kayak competition and a swimming race. Thus, alongside food, fishing, and sailing, this cultural theme also encompasses specific activities on and in the water.

Colombia: A Different Natural Environment

In the wider travel destination of Colombia, Los Nevados National Natural Park offers a different natural environment. It protects high-Andean wetlands, forests, and páramo, as well as the snow-capped volcanic peaks of Nevados del Ruiz (Kumanday), Santa Isabel (Poleka Kasue), and Tolima (Dulima). In the Cisne-Poleka Kasue and Otún sectors, visitors can hike and climb mountains, as well as observe birds, geological features, animals, and plants. Compared with the reefs and mangroves of San Andrés and Providencia, the focus here shifts to the high Andes and volcanic peaks. Check current access and operating conditions before visiting the sectors mentioned.
