Villeta can be explored from several perspectives: the municipality of Villeta is home to waterfalls and other natural sites; in the center of Villeta, Parque Principal La Molienda is a gathering place. When planning your trip, it is worth considering these topics separately: natural features, historic routes, and Panela culture offer different perspectives on the municipality. This will help you decide which aspects you would like to prioritize when choosing where to stay. If you want to focus on the landscape, the waterfalls and the lagoon offer specific points of interest. Those more interested in culture can explore the festival’s history, the historic route, and the central park.

Waterfalls and Natural Sites in the Municipality of Villeta

Los Saltos del Mico comprises seven waterfalls formed by the flow of the Quebrada Cune along the mountainside. The first two waterfalls are accessible by footpaths; check local conditions before visiting. La Bocatoma de Bagazal is located in the southwest of the municipality of Villeta and features artificial waterfalls more than 30 meters long and of varying heights.

Laguna Larga is located in the Salitre Blanco rural district. It is approximately 200 meters long, 15 meters wide, and around 3 meters deep. The natural Salto Caiquero is more than 10 meters high and lies on the border with the municipality of Nimaima.

The sites also differ in how they were formed: La Bocatoma has artificial waterfalls, while the Saltos del Mico were shaped by the flow of the Quebrada Cune, and Salto Caiquero is a natural waterfall. Laguna Larga, by contrast, is described in terms of the approximate dimensions of its body of water rather than a waterfall. These different features offer ways to explore Villeta’s landscape without describing all the natural sites in the same way.

Historic Route and Festival History

The camino real Villeta–Guaduas is a historic walking trail dating back to pre-Columbian times. If you plan to hike it, check its current accessibility in advance.

The Festival y Reinado Nacional de la Panela has been held since 1977 and has had international status since January 2013. If you would like to plan your trip around the festival, check the dates for the relevant edition in advance.

Gathering Place and Regional Cuisine

Parque Principal La Molienda is located in the center of Villeta. It is a gathering place surrounded by several monuments and food venues that reflect the local identity as “dulce.” Nearby, there are also monuments to the farming family and the trapiche. The park has several nightclubs and traditional restaurants. Since the opening hours and offerings of individual venues may change, it is advisable to check whether the place you want to visit is open before heading there.

Fiambre Villetano includes a serving of criolla chicken, green banana, potatoes, rice with offal, and cassava. It also contains other typical regional ingredients, including cilantro cimarrón. These ingredients give the dish a distinctive profile within local cuisine and offer another connection to Panela culture, which also features in the festival’s name.
