You can plan a stay in Manizales from several perspectives: the Cable Aéreo connects different points around the city, the Centro Histórico provides a clear framework for getting your bearings, and scenic viewpoints offer their own highlights. When choosing a hotel, it helps to consider in advance which of these themes you want to shape your days.

Getting around with the Cable Aéreo

The Cable Aéreo de Manizales is a public transport system with continuously moving cabins suspended from cables, connecting strategic points around the city. The first line runs between the city center and the Terminal de Transportes de Manizales bus station. A third line runs from the terminal toward Manizales’s Zona Rosa. The city center, terminal and Zona Rosa are therefore useful reference points for planning your day. If you arrive at the bus station or plan to visit the Zona Rosa, check the current route before setting out, as route details may change.

The Centro Histórico and its buildings

The Centro Histórico extends between Calle 17 and Calle 25 and between Carreras 19 and 25. These streets provide a clear spatial framework for finding your way around the center. Its historic character includes 134 buildings of Republican-era architecture whose façades or use have been preserved. In 1996, the center was declared a National Monument. Architecture enthusiasts will therefore find a defined urban area with numerous preserved buildings, rather than just a single monument.

Views and historical insights

From the Chipre viewpoint, you can see Manizales, the cordillera, the snow-capped peaks of Ruiz and Santa Isabel, and the valleys of the Cauca and Risaralda rivers. Chipre is one of the city’s traditional neighborhoods; during the day, you can take a walk around the viewpoint. The Monumento a los Colonizadores also offers views of the mountains surrounding Manizales. The monument weighs 25 tons, and specialized guides provide historical commentary there.

The Catedral Basílica de Nuestra Señora del Rosario de Manizales offers a different perspective: you can climb to a height of 113 meters, enjoy a 360-degree panoramic view, and learn about the building’s history. The viewpoints and the cathedral thus offer different perspectives on the city and its surroundings. If you plan to climb or hear historical commentary, check the visiting options for your dates in advance.

Activities at Ecoparque Los Yarumos

Ecoparque Los Yarumos has five canopy zip lines at heights of 30 to 70 meters and a 105-meter-long Tibetan bridge. A four-hour route through the forest is also described. The measurements of the zip lines and bridge offer a different point of comparison from the stated duration of the forest route: height and length are the key details for the first two, while the route is described in terms of time required. If you plan to take part in any of these activities, check its current availability beforehand.

Nature destinations in the municipality

The municipality of Manizales also has destinations with a different natural focus. In the Los Alcázares neighborhood, Ecoparques Alcázares-Arenillo covers 34 hectares at elevations of 1,900 to 2,000 meters. A total of 167 bird species have been recorded there. The Río Blanco reserve covers 4,900 hectares within the municipality, at elevations of 2,250 to 3,800 meters; its ecosystems include high-Andean forests and subpáramo. Río Blanco is also home to white-tailed deer, coatis, tayras and other wildlife. A total of 350 bird species have been recorded there.

A stop in Chipre

Around Chipre’s viewpoint, you can find obleas, ice cream, cholados and cotton candy. You can pair this with a daytime walk around the neighborhood. For planning your trip, the options offer a range of different focuses: getting around by public transport, architecture in the Centro Histórico, views in Chipre, and nature destinations in the municipality.
