Duitama can be explored through a range of themes: industrial history, regional architectural styles, culture and nature. If you are looking for a hotel in Duitama, these themes can help you decide what to focus on during your stay. The range extends from historic buildings and landscaped squares to a nature trail in the Municipality of Duitama.

Mill history and architecture

The Molino Tundama is part of the industrial heritage. In 1911, it was known as the Tundama Milling Industry; its construction took 13 years. In 1924, the mill began operating with 21 employees. Santiago Rivas Camacho was its main promoter. The dates mark different milestones: 1911 for the historic name, and 1924 for the start of operations.

The Catedral San Lorenzo dates from the 19th century and combines Romanesque, Doric and Spanish Baroque architectural elements. Beyond its architecture, it is a focal point for religious activities and for the appreciation, interpretation and presentation of cultural and historical art. Its various styles give the building several architectural points of reference.

Regional architectural styles in Pueblito Boyacense

Pueblito Boyacense is arranged around seven small squares. They represent Villa de Leyva, Tibasosa, Tenza, Sáchica, El Cocuy, Monguí and Ráquira. The buildings also reflect Boyacá’s architecture, including clay roof tiles, paved areas, roundwood and wooden balconies. In 2006, Pueblito Boyacense was declared a cultural and tourism heritage site of Boyacá. The squares and architectural styles make the seven represented towns the central points of reference in this complex.

Plaza de Los Libertadores

At the center of Plaza de Los Libertadores stands a Cedrela tree about 25 to 30 meters tall, which blooms from January to August. The square is also associated with Duitama’s traditional festivals and celebrations: most activities take place there. A botanical feature and an important festival venue therefore stand side by side; for your travel planning, check specific dates separately.

Culture and green spaces

Casona de Culturama promotes the cultural development of the municipality through theater, music, painting and dance. Workshops and events are also held there. Its range of activities thus spans the performing arts and painting, bringing together different forms of cultural work.

Parque Recreacional del Norte offers sports facilities, exercise areas for the general public, and green spaces for relaxation and leisure. It combines active pursuits with areas for more relaxing ways to spend your free time. Alongside Casona’s cultural offerings, the park provides a different focus from the historic buildings and squares.

Nature at Sendero EcolĂłgico la Zarza

Sendero Ecológico la Zarza is located in Vereda La Trinidad in the Municipality of Duitama. The route passes through Andean forest, follows a small stream, goes by a tall rocky waterfall and ends in the páramo. Activities on the trail include hiking, guided tours and birdwatching. If you are planning a specific guided tour, check its availability in advance. The trail thus connects several distinct landscape features, from forest and stream to páramo.
