San Carlos offers two distinct themes to consider when planning your trip: murals and church architecture on the one hand, and the municipality’s landscapes on the other. The murals are associated with the streets of San Carlos; the protected forest area and several tourist attractions are located within the municipality. This lets you decide in advance whether to focus more on culture, architecture or landscapes.

Murals and Cultural Route

The streets of San Carlos feature 120 digitized and documented murals and are considered the region’s largest open-air gallery. There is also the Ruta Cultural Virtual de San Carlos, Antioquia, a virtual cultural route featuring 120 murals. For a different perspective, there is the “Memoria a Todo Color” tour, which includes 176 murals in urban and rural areas of the municipality. The figures refer respectively to street murals, the virtual route and the tour; they do not add up to a single combined total. The three figures differ in format and geographic scope, so the murals in each should not be assumed to be the same.

Platform content can change over time, so check the current content of the virtual route. For “Memoria a Todo Color,” it is advisable to confirm the current arrangements before your visit. This will help you distinguish between a digital cultural offering and a tour covering both urban and rural areas when planning your trip.

Churches and Cultural Education

At the municipal level, two churches offer different architectural points of interest. The Iglesia de San Carlos de Borromeo is built in the Republican style and has three naves. The term “three naves” describes a church interior divided into a central nave and side aisles; it therefore specifies the interior layout as well as the style. The Iglesia Nuestra Señora de los Dolores was built between 1935 and 1968 and also features Republican architecture. The focus for San Carlos de Borromeo is its style and three-nave layout, while for Nuestra Señora de los Dolores it is the construction period and the same style. If you are interested in church architecture, you can consider these features separately.

The Casa de la Cultura Sigifredo Guzmán Henao adds an institutional cultural dimension to the buildings: in the municipality, it is a place for cultural education and promotion. This means the cultural offering includes educational work as well as murals and churches. You can therefore distinguish public art, architecture and cultural education as separate areas of interest.

Protected Forest and Destinations Across the Municipality

The La Tebaida regional protected forest area covers 7,414.89 hectares within the municipality of San Carlos. It extends across the rural districts of Bellavista, Hortona, Capotal, El Vergel, El Chocó, Pabellón, Betulia, Santa Inés, La Tupiada, Dinamarca and La Hondita. The designated area and boundaries of the protected area may be adjusted. La Tebaida thus offers a landscape-focused option alongside the cultural themes of the streets and buildings.

The municipality’s tourist attractions include Cascada la Chorrera and Sendero ecológico y cascada la Viejita. Their names offer two more landscape-related points of interest for planning your trip. Before committing to a visit to either destination, confirm current visiting arrangements. Together with La Tebaida, they broaden the picture of the municipality beyond its murals and churches, without implying that they form a single route.
