Leticia offers two different perspectives for planning your trip: city life around Parque Santander and the Malecón, and boat routes to nearby areas. When looking for a hotel in Leticia, consider whether your days will focus mainly on the city’s attractions, cultural festivals or trips on the river. These differences can help you plan your stay around your priorities.

Attractions and culture in Leticia

Parque Santander is in the city center and is Leticia’s main park. Locals and tourists use it as a meeting place, to relax and go for walks; it also offers a glimpse of everyday life. The park is therefore a focal point for the city’s public life, rather than a venue for a specific events program.

The Banco de la República Ethnographic Museum preserves everyday items and special objects, and presents them to locals and travelers from around the world. Its collection offers a different perspective from observing daily life in the park: here, the focus is on objects and the way they are presented.

Music festivals also shape the year. The Festival Internacional de Música Popular Amazonense Finmupa “El Pirarucú de Oro” is held every year in November, and the Festival Internacional de la Confraternidad Amazónica every year in July. Both are recognized as national cultural heritage.

The Malecón and trips on the Amazon

At the tourist Malecón, you’ll find canoes carrying plantains and cassava, tourist boats, and other boats used for river transport. You can book or pay for public river transport trips at offices along the Malecón. Three departures per day are listed. As the frequency may change, check current operating information before your trip.

One speedboat route runs from Leticia toward Puerto Nariño along the Amazon to Mocagua. The 57.5-kilometer trip is listed as taking about one hour and 30 minutes. Travel time varies when water levels are low, from July to November; check current information before setting out. Another speedboat route runs from Leticia toward Puerto Nariño as far as the mouth of the Río Amacayacu. This leg takes one hour and 40 minutes; from there, a private boat takes 30 minutes to reach the community of San Martín de Amacayacu. The time estimates refer to different destinations and legs of the journey. If you plan to continue to San Martín, contact the community in advance and confirm current transport arrangements.

Nature and culture in the surrounding area

Nearby Parque Nacional Natural Amacayacu encompasses tropical rainforest, flooded and terra firme forests, swamps, marshes, oxbow lakes and river systems typical of the Amazon rainforest. Its diversity ranges from regularly flooded forest areas to terra firme forests and a variety of aquatic landscapes.

A 2022 description of the Remedios vegetales trail in San Martín de Amacayacu says that visitors can learn more about plants and a grandmother’s knowledge of basket weaving and ceramics. A post from the same year describes murals in Mocagua as a way to learn about the community’s history. The two cultural themes are quite distinct: in San Martín, the focus is on plant knowledge and crafts; in Mocagua, on the community’s history.
