Santa María: Heritage and Landscape
Accommodation in Santa María
If you are considering Santa María as a destination for a hotel stay, it is worth looking at both the town center and the municipality as a whole. Santa María Centro is home to most of the urban population, as well as the main public buildings and shops. The plaza and parish church shape the townscape; across the municipality, there is also heritage, landscape, historic trail sections, rural activities, and olive products. This can help you decide whether you are more interested in the urban character or in cultural and landscape experiences.
Plaza, Parish Church, and Townscape
Santa María’s Plaza de Armas has a character typical of the colonial period. On its north side stands the Parroquia Inmaculada Concepción, whose architecture dates from the early 20th century. The different historical periods reflected in the plaza and parish church give the townscape its own historical setting.
Residents see the plaza as a public gathering place for rest and recreation, and associate it with vegetation and an area for children. On Cerro San José is the Gruta de la Inmaculada Concepción, after which the parish is named. These places and connections offer different points of interest if you are interested in Santa María’s religious and architectural heritage.
A house at the corner of Latorre and Palominos is one block from the plaza. Its corner pillar is topped by a stone pinnacle featuring a gargoyle. This carved corner pillar should not be confused with the house: on Calle Rodríguez in the municipality, a carved corner pillar is considered the only one of its kind in the Valle de Aconcagua, as well as a relic and a remnant of the colonial period.
Heritage in the Municipality
At the western entrance to the municipality of Santa María, brightly painted buildings from the early 20th century stand along Calle Latorre. They are considered a visitor attraction. In the municipality’s namesake locality, in the foothills of the Región de Valparaíso, is the Santuario de Santa Filomena. It was declared a National Monument on January 27, 2009.
The Fiesta de Santa Filomena takes place every year on November 9 at the temple built in her honor. If you would like to plan your trip around this recurring date, check the current program in advance. This will give you a practical guide for your timing without assuming a particular schedule.
Landscape and Trails
Laguna El Copín is a natural lake at an altitude of 2,458 meters, beyond Cerro Orolonco. Rain and winter snowfall feed the lake, and its flora and fauna are considered unique. At the border with Putaendo is Aguada de La Higuera, a natural spring with crystal-clear water. Exact access conditions may vary, so check them before visiting. The lake and the spring represent different landscape features within the municipality.
A historic section of the Inca Trail in Valle de Jahuel starts in El Zaino and ends at the high plateaus of Jahuel. Today, it forms part of Senderos de Chile. A second trail section in Valle de Jahuel runs along the foot of Cerro Orolonco and connects with the municipality of Putaendo at Los Baños del Parrón. The first section is defined by its starting and ending points; for the second, the route along Cerro Orolonco and the connection at Los Baños del Parrón are the key reference points. Check trail conditions locally if you plan to include either section in your itinerary. Trekking and horseback riding are also among the municipality’s rural activities.
Olive-Growing Culture and Rural Character
Olive trees in the Santa Filomena sector are considered to be more than 300 years old. Santa Filomena is known for producing olive oil, olive pastes, and olive jams. Together, the old trees and the range of olive products give the municipality an agricultural character and a distinct focus alongside its plaza, parish church, and landscape.
Santa María’s attractions thus range from its colonial-era plaza and early 20th-century architecture to olive-growing culture and rural trails.
